Blast shuts down due to maintenance costs exceeding revenue

The Ethereum Layer 2 network Blast has announced its shutdown, citing that maintenance costs have exceeded revenue, and the team has determined there is no credible path to make the chain sustainable.

The announcement requests users to withdraw on-chain assets and balances from the Blast progressive web app back to the Ethereum mainnet. The team will first withdraw staked assets held in Lido, which is expected to take about a week, during which withdrawals will be paused; after this, withdrawal delays will be reduced to 24 hours, and the regular interface will be available until October 26. After the 26th, assets can still be withdrawn, but users must directly call the Blast bridge contract on the Ethereum Layer 1, with operational instructions to be published before the deadline.

Blast launched in November 2023, having previously completed a $20 million funding round led by Paradigm and Standard Crypto. Before the mainnet officially opened in February 2024, the locked value exceeded $2 billion, with nearly 200,000 early access users; according to DeFiLlama, the current total locked value is just over $32 million. The Defiant reports that there is still about $63.5 million in its standard bridge.

The network was originally positioned to provide native yield for bridged Ether and stablecoins, with yields coming from Ethereum staking and physical asset protocols, automatically distributed to users. Following the shutdown announcement, BLAST fell 17% on Friday, with a market cap dropping to about $23 million.

South Korea's two major exchanges, Upbit and Bithumb, have placed BLAST on a trading watchlist. Upbit stated that the project's commercial operations lack sufficient credibility and sustainability, and has suspended deposits for the BLAST/KRW, BLAST/BTC, and BLAST/USDT trading pairs, warning that newly deposited tokens may not be credited; Bithumb stated it needs to verify the continuity of operations after the mainnet shutdown, actual progress, and the impact on token use and functionality, suspending deposits from October 3 at 1:30 AM. Both exchanges will decide whether to lift the warning or terminate trading support between October 12 and 16.

This is an event-driven sell-off, not new demand. Holders are selling BLAST between the bridge withdrawal and exchange warnings, with buying mainly from bottom-fishing and arbitrage, as funds flow back from Blast chain yield positions to Ethereum mainnet staking and stablecoins. Beneficiaries are the liquidity on the Ethereum mainnet and other Layer 2s that are still operational and can cover costs; those under pressure are BLAST holders, applications relying on Blast's native yield, and similar chains that use points and airdrops as retention methods.
