Stripe CEO Patrick Collison advises people in their twenties to first understand where the highest standards are, and then personally immerse themselves in that environment. Andreessen Horowitz shared this excerpt from his conversation with Dwarkesh Patel in February 2024.

His exact words were: When talking to people from other fields, the most common thing heard is that after working with a certain person, institution, or environment, they first realize what true excellence is, which permanently rewrites their work expectations. In their twenties, one can initially choose an area of interest, but the next step should be to find where standards are concretized and experience it.

In the same interview, he quoted "Apprentice to Genius": three generations of scientists mentor each other, passing down not just techniques, but also how to choose topics—problems must be significant enough yet not so difficult that they cannot be advanced—and what constitutes high standards. His personal path began as a young programmer in Ireland, entering MIT at 16 to study mathematics, dropping out twice, first creating the auction tool Auctomatic, and then co-founding Stripe with his brother John, turning internet payment processing into a reusable developer interface.

Stripe has long viewed craftsmanship and interface design as measurable goals rather than slogans. In the interview, he emphasized APIs with a ten-year scale, reliability, and hiring people who take "the best software" seriously; the company also engages in Stripe Climate, Arc Institute, and Fast Grants, extending the same approach of "taking goals seriously" to climate and biomedicine. He does not uniformly advise people in their twenties to go to San Francisco: some should go, while others should deepen their expertise in a certain field; paths do not need to replicate his.

In recent years, he has also cooled on the dropout narrative, stating that thinking the opportunity window was fleeting was a misjudgment; opportunities in Silicon Valley have not disappeared; if one enjoys college, finishing it is not a one-way trap, and the outside world hardly cares afterward. a16z's current reposting of the old interview is a reminder that "standards must be embodied" in the context of talent competition.

The market mechanism is talent pricing, not weekly financing. Buyers are Stripe, frontier labs, and companies that still hire based on craftsmanship, while sellers are those in their twenties, with standards yet to be calibrated.
