Whatnot's GMV exceeds $8 billion in the first half

Live e-commerce platform Whatnot claims that its gross merchandise volume (GMV) in the first half of 2026 has surpassed $8 billion, indicating that its live trading scale has exceeded the total amount of the previous year within just six months.

Whatnot was founded in 2019 by Grant LaFontaine and Logan Head, initially focusing on trading collectibles like Pokémon cards. It now covers the North American and European markets and positions itself as the largest live e-commerce platform in the region; its categories have expanded from collectibles to clothing, beauty, home goods, and food.

The platform is not centered around searching for products but rather driven by live browsing, auction interaction, and personalized seller management. Sellers showcase products during live streams, explain quality and seasonality, and answer questions in real-time; users often enter content scenes first and then make specific purchasing decisions through entertainment and interaction.

Whatnot states that users spend an average of about 95 minutes per day on the platform, but more than 80% of users do not make a purchase on any given day. This data indicates that the platform currently prioritizes accumulating attention and community engagement rather than pursuing immediate conversions for each visit; non-purchasing traffic can still enhance seller exposure, live streaming popularity, and subsequent repurchase opportunities.

a16z participated in Whatnot's Series A investment. Whatnot currently monetizes through transaction commissions and payment processing fees, with industry data showing that the platform typically charges about 8% commission on live and market transactions, in addition to standard payment processing fees; an increase in GMV does not equate to confirmed revenue for the platform, as actual income depends on rates, subsidies, refunds, and fulfillment costs.

In terms of market mechanism, buyers view live streaming as an entertainment, discovery, and transaction entry point, while sellers are small and medium-sized businesses that rely on personal branding, scarce sources, and real-time interaction to establish repeat purchases; the platform takes a commission from transaction amounts and controls traffic distribution. GMV growth is driven by live streaming duration, seller supply, cross-category expansion, and auction mechanisms; highly engaged sellers and payment and fulfillment service providers benefit, while traditional static shelf e-commerce and merchants lacking content operation capabilities face pressure from diverted user attention.
