The Abstract chain will cease operations on December 15.

Abstract has announced that its Ethereum Layer 2 will gradually shut down, with the chain stopping operations on December 15, 2026. Funds remaining on the chain and not yet migrated will be inaccessible at that time.

Users can migrate their assets via the official migration center at migrate.abs.xyz or the native cross-chain bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz. The native bridge has an approximate 3-hour delay. The parent company, Igloo Inc., will simultaneously shift its focus back to Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy NFT, and PENGU.

The chain has been operational for nearly three years. The Portal was referred to by the team as a benchmark for on-chain discovery and distribution, while the Abstract Global Wallet was called the most widely adopted smart contract wallet in the crypto space. Over 144 independent applications were deployed on the chain, with more than 400,000 users and over 300 million transactions, with partners including Red Bull Racing and Disney.

Igloo stated that after acquiring Frame in the summer of 2024, it originally planned to create an independent chain using consumer-grade crypto. Over the past 18 months, Igloo has continuously funded the project, incurring losses of tens of millions of dollars over two years. In the past 12 months, various scaling paths have been attempted internally, but no product-market fit for independent operation has been found.

The official reasons for the stagnation include limited DeFi ecosystem, weak on-chain liquidity, minimal institutional funding, and insufficient budget compared to competitors, along with high operational costs. The team has determined that maintaining a consumer-grade crypto chain as an independent model has become unsustainable, as the competitive landscape for public chains has significantly changed during this period.

This is a withdrawal driven by shutdown, not a new allocation. Holding and market-making funds are being returned to Ethereum via the official bridge, and liquidity in the on-chain pool continues to diminish. Beneficiaries are the Ethereum mainnet and other Layer 2s that still have distribution capabilities, while those under pressure are applications deployed solely on Abstract, participants with points, and addresses unable to migrate before the deadline.
