a16z Growth Fund General Partner Sarah Wang stated that when Martin Casado introduced her to Fei-Fei Li, World Labs had not yet raised funds, and the path was clear: enter early. AMD is acquiring World Labs for approximately $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal, expected to close by the end of the year. Li will serve as AMD's Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting to Lisa Su. World Labs focuses on spatial intelligence and world modeling, generating and simulating interactive 3D environments from text, images, and videos. It is expected to go public in 2024 with a valuation exceeding $1 billion, having completed around $1 billion in financing this year, with investors including a16z, NEA, Nvidia, and Autodesk. The company has about 70 employees and previously acquired the robotics simulation team SceniX.

Co-founders also include Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall. Wang noted that over the past year, she has watched the three advance cutting-edge models and build team culture. She described Casado as a partner who is hands-on at all levels of the company. The deal shifts a16z's early equity from private equity valuation to AMD stock.

The chipmaker's acquisition of the modeling lab aims to embed physical world simulation workloads into hardware roadmaps. Nvidia is already an investor in World Labs, but how its shares will be handled during the acquisition has not been clarified in public materials. The price is approximately eight times the expected valuation in 2024, which means a per capita price exceeding $100 million for the team of about 70 people.

The buy-side seeks world models and Li's team at AMD; the sell-side involves the founders and early funds handing over the spatial intelligence lab. Funding has shifted from primary market follow-on investments to publicly traded company stock. The event driver is the $8.2 billion acquisition closing.
