Tesla has extended the call time for its Austin Robotaxi service from 10 PM to 11 PM, with the official account confirming that rides in the city can now be booked until 11 PM.

Elon Musk stated that the operating hours have been increased by one hour, noting that the current main bottleneck is not demand, but rather nighttime low-contrast target recognition, emphasizing the need to avoid running over pets in low visibility. He cited a specific scenario involving a gray kitten on a dark road, where the contrast between the vehicle and the ground is very low, and existing vision systems remain unstable in low light conditions.

Austin is the launch city for this service. When it went live in June 2025, the operating window was approximately from 6 AM to midnight, which was later extended to 2 AM in September of the same year; in August 2026, it was reverted back to 6 AM to 10 PM, covering Austin, Dallas, Houston, as well as Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. This time, only Austin has been confirmed for the additional hour, with no announcement regarding other cities.

The nighttime constraints are directly related to the goal of 24-hour operation. Tesla's AI head, Ashok Elluswamy, stated in September 2026 that 24-hour autonomous service is expected to be in place "around next month," provided that the next batch of technology modules integrated into the FSD v15 plan is completed. The Cybercab, which has no steering wheel or pedals, was opened to the public in Austin on September 4, 2026.

Austin has seen a continuous stream of orders without supervision. Independent tracking recorded 170 trips in Austin over two weeks in August 2026, involving 54 vehicles, all without safety operators on board; during the same period, the Bay Area service still had safety operators, with a window extending to 2 AM. The company has not disclosed the software version number corresponding to this delay or the number of operational vehicles in Austin.

This is an event-driven supply window extension, not a fare adjustment. The additional hour returns previously truncated evening orders to the Tesla fleet, benefiting Austin's nighttime ride-hailing users and allowing autonomous vehicles to operate for an extra hour; the pressure point remains the perception stack, which is still limited by low-light pet and low-contrast obstacle recognition, as well as local competitors like Waymo that can already operate later. No new funding has been disclosed, and the change occurs in the utilization of the existing autonomous fleet.
