Code from the second beta of the iOS 27.2 developer version shows that Apple is still developing a feature internally named AutoLock: if the phone is determined to be snatched from the user's hand, it will automatically lock and enable theft protection to prevent data from being accessed while unlocked. This feature is not yet available to test users; backend services have been enabled, but the actual locking component remains off.

Signals noted by 9to5Mac include: a sudden acceleration consistent with a snatching motion, the paired Apple Watch being unreachable or disconnected for a period, prolonged network disconnection, and the device remaining unlocked beyond a certain threshold. The gyroscope and accelerometer are used to identify grabbing motions, while the watch determines if the phone has suddenly left the wrist.

The anti-false lock mechanism includes successful biometric recognition, active foreground applications, familiar locations, and temporarily suppressing re-locking after repeated triggers. The system operates on a voting basis: theft signals request locking, while biometric recognition and familiar locations can veto this. After locking, viewing saved passwords, credit cards, and other sensitive operations requires biometric recognition, while actions like changing the Apple account password are still subject to a mandatory delay due to theft protection.

This clue first appeared in testing code in May 2026, and this round of the beta adds to the list of signals and vetoes. Apple has not officially announced a launch date. On the Android side, theft detection locking is already available for comparison. Media suggests scenarios like street or cycling theft: users may still have their phones unlocked while watching short videos.

Buyers are users in high-theft areas and insurance companies, while sellers are mobile systems that harvest safety switches from sensors and watch ecosystems. Funds do not change hands immediately due to testing code; once the feature is enabled by default, it will increase the attachment rate of watches and enhance data security after trade-ins. Beneficiaries are users with paired watches, while those under pressure are the theft chains relying on unlocking windows to search for wallets and verification codes, as well as intense sports scenarios that may trigger false locks due to sudden acceleration.

The feature is still under development, and the beta does not show a switch. The code also mentions familiar location vetoes, meaning homes and workplaces are less likely to trigger false alarms.
