Standard Chartered Bank announced that it is opening up deliverable Bitcoin to USD and Ethereum to USD spot trading for qualified institutional clients through its entity in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). It claims to be the first and currently the only global systemically important bank in the region to offer institutional digital asset spot trading.

The trading utilizes the bank's existing electronic channels and foreign exchange interface, without the need to open a separate retail exchange account. Clients can choose to settle with their own custodians or connect to Standard Chartered's digital asset custody, which will receive a DFSA license in the UAE in September 2024; execution capabilities are layered on top of custody, forming a closed loop for ordering and safekeeping within the same group. The UK branch had already launched deliverable spot trading for institutions in July 2025, also claiming to be the first among global systemically important banks, and this move brings the same capability to the UAE.

Rola Abu Manneh, CEO for UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan, highlighted the selling points as the regulatory framework combined with global banking custody, governance, and connectivity. At the group level, stablecoins and brokerage services are being rolled out in parallel: in July 2026, in collaboration with Circle, institutional clients will be able to mint and redeem USDC through a single account opened with the bank, without needing a separate Circle account; in the same month, a pilot for Bitcoin and Ethereum spot trading as a prime brokerage credit intermediary was completed with LMAX, with T+1 settlement in the UK branch and underlying assets held in DIFC custody; on September 1, the first Bitcoin spot trade was completed on the Bermuda 24X platform with Cumberland DRW, with Standard Chartered acting as the liquidity demand side.

The first custody clients include Brevan Howard's digital asset division. The Basel Committee has set the risk weight for unhedged crypto at up to 1250%, and prime brokerage high yields are used to hedge capital usage. The UAE has multiple layers of licenses including VARA, DFSA, and ADGM, and Standard Chartered also provides fiat deposit and withdrawal services and client fund accounts for licensed brokers.

Who is buying and who is selling: The driving force behind this event is integrating crypto spot trading into the bank's foreign exchange workflow, rather than retail investors trading cryptocurrencies. Buyers are institutions seeking deliverable spot, bank-level settlement, and optional custody; sellers are market-making and credit intermediaries on the bank's balance sheet. Beneficiaries include Standard Chartered, which already has DIFC custody and UK spot licenses, while local exchanges that must outsource fiat channels and custody to banks are under pressure. Funds are flowing from "opening accounts on exchanges" to "clicking BTC/USD on the bank interface."
