Nillion to Gradually Shut Down L2 and Migrate to Ethereum

Nillion clarified in a post that it will gradually shut down Nillion L2 in the coming weeks, as the project is now running on the Ethereum mainnet. Users holding NIL on the L2 need to migrate their tokens to Ethereum L1 before the shutdown.

Nillion has provided a bridging portal for users to complete the migration. The company stated that a previous post raised concerns among some users, hence the clarification.

This adjustment is emphasized as a maintenance operation. The shutdown process will be phased rather than immediate.

Users must complete the transfer of tokens from L2 to L1 within a specified time window. The bridging portal is publicly available to support addresses holding NIL in executing the migration.

Nillion clearly stated that the project is now running on the Ethereum mainnet, thus there is no longer a need to maintain an independent L2. The shutdown arrangements are directly related to the operational status of the mainnet.

This closure occurs during the operational adjustment phase after the project has completed its mainnet deployment. Users need to proactively move their assets out of L2, with funds and tokens flowing to Ethereum L1. Users still holding L2 balances face migration operations, while the project team reduces resource investment in maintaining an independent L2.

Nillion previously chose to launch the NIL token and related functionalities on an independent L2, and has since completed the migration to the Ethereum mainnet. This path has been seen in multiple protocols, where liquidity and user behavior are tested on dedicated chains or L2s before consolidating core states and token settlements on the Ethereum mainnet. Nillion has clearly provided a shutdown time window and bridging portal, continuing the operational approach of centralizing from auxiliary layers to the mainnet.

The resource adjustment mainly reflects the cessation of ongoing maintenance for Nillion L2 and guiding user assets to Ethereum L1. The provision of the bridging portal reduces migration friction, motivated by the desire to lower the costs of dual-layer parallel operations while unifying tokens and contract states on the mainnet, facilitating subsequent interactions with other protocols within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Similar adjustments can be seen in some early projects that issued tokens on dedicated sidechains or L2s, shutting down the original layer after the mainnet functionalities are ready, such as some gaming or data availability-related projects completing off-chain operations after mainnet migration. Nillion is currently transitioning from L2 auxiliary operations to a single settlement layer on the Ethereum mainnet.

This essentially represents a restructuring of the industry chain. The maintenance costs of an independent L2 and the dispersed state of users are replaced by unified settlement on the mainnet. Mechanically, the project team forces the convergence of token holdings from L2 to L1 by providing bridging and a clear shutdown timeline, reducing cross-layer synchronization and security maintenance investments, allowing subsequent functional development and liquidity to be concentrated in a single mainnet environment.
