Tesla will unveil the new generation Roadster in Waco, Texas on October 1, near SpaceX's rocket testing site in McGregor. Multiple reports indicate that the demonstration will be conducted remotely with no one inside the car, and spectators will need to watch from hundreds of meters away due to the noise from SpaceX's cold gas thrusters being potentially damaging to hearing.

Former Tesla president Jon McNeill (who served from 2015 to 2018) revealed that the SpaceX cold gas thruster system, codenamed "A71", operates with nozzles facing downward powered by compressed gas bottles, using the same composite material tank design as the "Falcon 9" rocket. McNeill stated, "I’m not sure if we will see flight, but we might see hovering in this demonstration," and believes the thruster system is the real reason for the repeated delays of the Roadster, essentially indicating that Tesla is integrating SpaceX technology more deeply into its products.

According to a recent report from The Information, the Roadster engineering team initially explored completely abandoning the original design released in 2017, considering using a modified Model S Plaid body or even referencing the design language of the Lamborghini Countach. The adjustments were close to "redesigning a flying vehicle", ultimately converging on a technology route closer to brief hovering rather than actual flight.

The latest teaser image released by Tesla shows four upward shooting white light effects around the car body, which aligns with a previous Tesla patent describing "fans built into the body airflow channels generating downforce", widely interpreted as a visualization of the thruster nozzles. Musk had previously revealed design concepts during a podcast interview in 2020—"At least I’m confident in making a thruster system: the license plate flips down like in a 007 movie, hiding rocket thrusters that can provide three tons of thrust."

The version equipped with thrusters is said to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 1.1 seconds, corresponding to approximately 2.75G of overload, significantly faster than the standard version's 1.9 seconds; however, this version is unlikely to have legal road qualifications and may only be sold in limited quantities as a "track-only" model.

Since its debut in 2017, the Roadster has experienced multiple delays (at least nine according to former president McNeill). The October 1 event is only an "unveiling" rather than a delivery— even if the demonstration goes smoothly, mass production models are expected to take another 12 to 18 months to deliver to customers. For early reservers who have paid a $50,000 deposit and waited nearly ten years, this release is more of a brand narrative and a signal to the capital market—especially in the context of McNeill publicly speculating that Tesla and SpaceX "will eventually come together". The deep integration of Roadster with SpaceX technology is interpreted by some market participants as another preparatory action for Tesla's stock price to align with the valuation expectations of Musk's SpaceX.
