Patrick Collison publicly outlined the potential impact of personal AI agents on the economy, noting that companies have long exploited consumers' bounded rationality as original "superintelligences," while agents may make consumers more rational and structurally subsidize product quality.

Collison is the co-founder and CEO of Stripe. He referenced Herbert Simon's concept of bounded rationality, citing examples of insurance companies selling add-on policies at prices far above standard policies at the end of the booking process, where businesses counteract consumers' attention deficits and incomplete information by amortizing cognitive surplus. Personal agents will make interactions with companies more rational.

Specific changes include a decrease in the effects of price discrimination (agents will carefully search for coupons) and changes in customer cross-subsidization (subscribers who forget to cancel are subsidized by those who do not forget). He is uncertain about the overall direction of economic burden transfer. In corporate strategy, agents represent a structural subsidy for product quality: if consumers consistently invest at least 10 hours researching purchases, focusing on improving products will be more effective than relying solely on distribution.

Information about product quality will become more important, as agents will have a continuous demand for relevant signals; the value of data will not only be used for training models but will also enhance cheaper intelligence as a complement. Open questions include whether agents will reinforce the superstar effect (rational agents converge on the same product) or increase dispersion (better capturing individual preferences).

Internet companies have long monetized based on short attention demand routing, leading to inefficiencies in ranking algorithms and placement costs. Agents will change the nature and value of such routing. Overall, the market is a highly imperfect value attribution machine, and agents may change backpropagation, allowing better products to receive higher returns and making quality-focused companies feel that the environment is more favorable to them.

These views are based on the assumption that agents stand on the side of consumers, which Collison believes is a winning strategy, but the specific implications remain to be seen. Capital and attention may shift from short-term ranking fees and cross-subsidization to quality signals and research infrastructure, putting pressure on pricing strategies that rely on information asymmetry, while high-quality products and data providers benefit.
