The framework of the book is called Bullseye: first, list nineteen customer acquisition channels, then conduct small-scale tests to identify the one that truly drives growth and focus on it, rather than spreading efforts evenly across all channels. The channels include viral marketing, paid advertising, content marketing, search engine optimization, business development, sales, community engagement, public speaking, and engineering as marketing. Weinberg illustrates with DuckDuckGo's experience that a privacy-focused search engine needs to have a product first, followed by a sustained combination of channels to pull users away from default search engines; otherwise, the code remains confined to a small circle.

The core distinction is between production and distribution. Engineering determines whether something works, while distribution determines whether there will be a next server bill. The authors argue that early teams often spend all their time on features, treating the assumption "users will come on their own" as unverified; the book calls for customer acquisition experiments to be prioritized equally with development work and to be tested with repeatable unit economics, rather than using the launch date as a growth date.

Weinberg also warns: no single channel is permanently effective for all companies. The bullseye will move, and testing must be continuous. Growth is not a department name; it is about finding the path that is cost-effective for the current set of users. Knowing how to market here does not mean just writing slogans; it means designing measurable outreach.

From a market mechanism perspective, this statement shifts budgets from pure R&D to verifiable customer acquisition. Buyers are scaling startups looking for efficient growth roles; sellers are outsourced developers who only sell hours without guaranteeing outreach. Funds will burn on features before validating channels, and after validation, will focus on one path. Benefiting are small teams that can simultaneously improve products and channels, while under pressure are portfolios of startups that are feature-rich but have zero entry points.

As a supplementary note, the first edition of the book was published in the mid-2010s, and the channel list reflects the search, app store, and content environment of that time; the principle is testing and focus, with specific channel weights changing according to platform algorithms. DuckDuckGo later achieved a significant search market share through product differentiation and long-term distribution, rather than a one-time release.
