ArtCraft Rebuilds Seven Open Source Adobe Alternative Applications Using Claude

Software engineer Brandon Thomas, through the ArtCraft team, has released seven free open-source applications as clean room alternatives to major Adobe tools, all written in Rust and completed with Claude Opus 5.5.

The seven applications correspond to PhotoCraft for Photoshop, VectorCraft for Illustrator, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, LightCraft for Lightroom, EffectCraft for After Effects, DesignCraft for InDesign, and PrintCraft for Acrobat Pro. They run on Windows, Linux, and macOS, use MIT or Apache licenses, do not utilize Adobe source code, and some support WebAssembly browser versions. The repositories will be pushed to the GitHub organization 'storytold' within a few days.

Each application includes a control port and a JSON batch interface, and supports MCP servers, allowing AI agents to directly open files, edit layers, adjust parameters, and export finished products without manual keyboard operation. PhotoCraft supports opening and saving layered PSD and PSB files, including layers, masks, adjustment layers, and brush engines, claiming high round-trip compatibility with test files. Thomas stated that multiple parallel Opus 5.5 agents were used to quickly implement menus and functionalities.

Currently, only a few applications have entered the early alpha stage, with project documentation estimating PhotoCraft's professional daily replacement capability at about one-quarter. Thomas previously stated on Reddit that the goal was to achieve feature parity within a month, later adjusting this to several months instead of years. Development will be funded by selling token access to ArtCraft's existing visual AI models and IDE, which can also be used within the applications alongside third-party models.

Thomas previously founded ArtCraft, focusing on controllable AI image and video editing tools, and served as CEO of Storyteller.ai and an engineer at Square. The application interface intentionally reuses Adobe's menu, panel, and shortcut layouts to lower user migration costs. PhotoCraft has received over tens of thousands of stars on GitHub, while other applications have also garnered thousands of stars.

Market Mechanism: Adobe sells seats through monthly subscriptions, targeting manual design workflows. ArtCraft will restructure the production layer into a headless interface that can be directly driven by agents, shifting funding from subscription seats to open-source tools and accompanying AI model token sales. Companies locked into Adobe subscriptions are under pressure, while creators and developers with automation needs benefit, facing the risk of traditional manual interaction software being bypassed.

ABAB AI Insight

Brandon Thomas previously founded ArtCraft as a controllable AI image and video creation tool, focusing on precise editing after generation. He has experience in Rust development from his time at Storyteller.ai and as an engineer at Square. This time, he expands ArtCraft from a single AI editing tool to seven independent open-source desktop applications, clearly rebuilding Adobe functionalities in a clean room manner from public specifications and observable behaviors, avoiding direct reuse of proprietary code.

On the capital path, ArtCraft uses free open-source applications as an entry point, generating revenue by embedding its visual AI models within the applications and selling token access. The development process heavily relies on parallel agents of Claude Opus 5.5 to complete code generation and iteration, measuring the remaining workload in agent hours. Resources shift from long-term accumulated interfaces and functionalities to model calls and contributions from the open-source community.

This is similar to early open-source office suites benchmarking Microsoft Office functionalities or browser engines rewriting proprietary rendering. Current creative software is transitioning from primarily manual interaction interfaces to interfaces directly driven by agents, with ArtCraft restructuring the post-production layer from mouse operations to programmable control.

Essentially, this is a technological replacement. The core value of Adobe software lies in workflows and file compatibility optimized for human operation, as agents cannot "sit at the seat" to complete fine-tuning, color grading, and exporting. By rebuilding in a clean room and embedding control protocols, ArtCraft opens the same production layer for direct calls by agents, allowing generation and refinement to be completed in the same automated pipeline, thus decreasing the marginal value of the subscription seat model.

ABAB News · Cognitive Laws 1. Human-optimized interfaces become bottlenecks in front of agents. 2. Clean room reconstruction transforms proprietary workflows into programmable interfaces. 3. Subscription seats lock in manpower, not production itself.
