Clashes occurred between protesters and police near Place de la Bastille in Paris, resulting in about 50 police injuries. The French Ministry of the Interior reported that approximately 25,000 people participated in related actions in Paris that day.

The clashes took place on the afternoon of October 8, when thousands gathered at Place de la Bastille. The protest started peacefully, but some individuals later threw cobblestones, fireworks, and chimney fragments from rooftops at the police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons. The Ministry of the Interior estimated that around 71,500 people participated in protests and gatherings nationwide that day, with about 24,500 to 25,000 in Paris and another 55,000 participating in actions outside schools; 504 arrests were made, and approximately 48 police and gendarmes were injured.

The protests, led by high school students, demand improvements in school conditions, more teachers, and solutions to issues of dilapidated and overcrowded classrooms. They have been ongoing for several weeks since late September and have spread to multiple cities. To date, over 6,600 arrests have been made, mostly of minors, with approximately 215 injured students, 85 to 89 injured staff members, and hundreds of injured police and gendarmes. Prime Minister Lecornu stated that this represents the heaviest toll on the school system in decades.

Police deployed riot control units at Place de la Bastille, which faced attacks after around 4:20 PM and responded accordingly. After clearing the area in the evening, graffiti was left on site. Some extreme actions included throwing objects from residential rooftops, raising discussions about the nature of the attacks. The government had previously promised to deploy an additional 3,000 teachers and other measures, but the protests did not immediately subside.

This incident represents an escalation of marginal violence within ongoing student protests. The flow of funds and resources relates to government education budget allocations and security response costs, with protesters mobilizing to pressure for increased public education investment, while police maintain order at the cost of direct casualties. The beneficiaries are the students and union groups advocating for improved educational conditions (if policy adjustments are realized), while the burden falls on frontline police, injured minors, and the related school system.
