Amazon has launched its first pound bond issuance, with four terms covering 3 years, 6 years, 12 years, and 19 years, aimed at funding its AI expansion and broadening its investor pool beyond dollars.

The preliminary pricing guidance is approximately 70 basis points above UK government bonds for the 3-year term, 90 basis points for the 6-year term, 105 basis points for the 12-year term, and 110 basis points for the 19-year term. Lead underwriters include JPMorgan, Barclays, HSBC, and NatWest, with pricing planned for the same day. The issuance size has not yet been finalized.

This marks the company's fourth foray outside the dollar market this year: in March, it issued a record corporate euro bond, followed by a six-tranche issuance in Swiss francs and the largest corporate bond in the Canadian market. Bond issuances by cloud vendors in 2026 have exceeded $200 billion, with Amazon's own securities issuance exceeding $92 billion this year, ranking among the largest cloud vendors.

The company's capital expenditure guidance is approximately $200 billion, primarily for data centers, self-developed chips, and cloud infrastructure. Operating cash flow remains high over the past twelve months, but free cash flow has turned negative due to a significant increase in equipment purchases. A $25 billion order for dollar bonds in July showed weaker demand compared to record subscriptions earlier in the year, indicating that the absorption capacity of a single market is nearing its limit.

The European Central Bank recently warned that the influx of large tech companies into the euro bond market could crowd out other borrowers and raise their financing costs. Alphabet issued approximately £5.5 billion in the pound market in February, including ultra-long maturities. Amazon is now adding pounds to its list of currencies after euros, Swiss francs, yen, Canadian dollars, and Australian dollars.

Mechanically, this is driven by financing rather than product release: funds allocated to pound assets by insurance and pension funds are buying high-grade tech bonds, with UK government bond spreads serving as the pricing anchor. Beneficiaries are cloud vendors and underwriters that can provide long-duration, high-rated paper; pressured are ordinary corporate issuers competing for pound and euro quotas. Funds are shifting from current account cash flows to advance capacity construction in the bond market.

Transactions are still awaiting pricing completion, and the final size and the extent of spread narrowing post-issuance will determine how much more of such issuances the market can absorb.
