India's largest agricultural warehousing company, Arya.ag, is utilizing Avalanche technology to create on-chain records of grain storage, electronic negotiable warehouse receipts, and loan statuses, allowing lending institutions to verify the crop collateral behind agricultural loans. This was announced by Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and head of the Aadhaar project, at the Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai.

The company has built and operates a dedicated layer-1 chain based on Avalanche technology, currently serving only its own warehouses, with plans to open it to other storage providers. Devika Mittal, head of Ava Labs India, stated that banks can now connect, with three major banks already joining the layer-1 chain, though their names have not been disclosed. Finternet is responsible for establishing interoperability rules between warehouses and lending institutions, and synthesizing farmers, goods, warehouses, and insurance information into a composite token for banks to assess collateral risk.

The tokenized object is the legally recognized electronic negotiable warehouse receipt (e-NWR) in India, allowing farmers to borrow against stored grain without having to sell it immediately. Sample collectors input inventory data into the Arya portal, which is then linked to warehouse receipts, pledges, and loan balances to verify the existence of crops, whether they have been pledged, and how much debt is outstanding. The on-chain records do not transfer ownership of the grain nor automatically equate to faster approvals or lower interest rates.

The scale figures describe existing business, not the amount already on-chain. The warehousing system manages approximately $2 billion worth of crops, facilitating about $1.3 billion in agricultural credit annually through traditional business, while its non-banking financial institution, Arya Dhan, directly lends about $230 million per year. The network covers around 12,000 leased warehouses, 850,000 to 900,000 farmers, and about 60% of districts in India. Both the company and Ava Labs have not disclosed the scale of collateral or loans on-chain, launch timelines, transaction counts, or block explorer details.

Loan sources are divided into two paths: one is directly issued by Arya Dhan, and the other is provided by banks and other institutions that lend after confirming that the warehouse records do not reflect repeated pledges. The system aims to reduce fragmentation of warehouse receipts and repeated pledging, rather than turning grain into publicly tradable tokens. Other participants include Finternet Labs, with the concept traceable to a framework from a 2024 paper co-authored by the Bank for International Settlements and Nilekani.

On the market mechanism, this is a verification infrastructure rather than a spot token. Buyers are banks and Arya Dhan that need to confirm the authenticity of collateral, while sellers are storage providers that write inventory data into a shared ledger. Funds continue to flow through existing agricultural loan channels, with the chain only changing the visibility of repeated pledges. Beneficiaries include lending institutions that require a unified view of collateral, and Ava Labs, which provides permissioned chain technology; those under pressure are intermediaries relying on information opacity for repeated collateral or high-interest bridging. The event is driven by leading storage providers digitizing existing e-NWRs, rather than a sudden emergence of speculative agricultural products on public chains.

On a supplementary level, the dedicated layer-1 chain is closer to a permissioned ledger, with rules tailored to banks and warehousing regulations, isolated from the Avalanche public chain mainnet. Before the contract address and on-chain volume are disclosed, the $2 billion figure refers to inventory metrics, not migrated credit balances.
