Cloudflare CEO Announces AI Agent Traffic Surpasses Human Traffic for the First Time
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince stated that agentic traffic has grown far beyond expectations and has, for the first time in internet history, surpassed human traffic.
Prince originally predicted this milestone would occur by the end of 2027 or early 2028, but it has arrived significantly earlier.
This shift accelerates the dominance of AI automated traffic on the internet, with the proportion of real human traffic falling below 50% for the first time.

Matthew Prince has previously predicted multiple times between 2023 and 2025 that AI crawlers and agent traffic would rapidly erode internet bandwidth. He emphasized during Cloudflare's earnings calls that bot traffic has continued to rise from over 40% in 2022. This "early arrival" continues his long-term observation of the impact of AI infrastructure.
In terms of capital pathways, Cloudflare directly benefits from the surge in bot traffic through its global CDN and security services. Enterprise clients are increasing their investments in paid services such as WAF and rate limiting to defend against AI agent attacks. Prince's team is transforming changes in traffic patterns into a defensive product line with higher ARPU.
Similar to how mobile traffic surpassed desktop traffic in the 2010s, Facebook and Google profited by transforming their advertising systems. In this case, the internet is transitioning from human dominance to AI agent dominance, with Cloudflare positioned at the core of this traffic reconstruction as a neutral infrastructure provider.
Essentially, this represents a technological substitution: AI agents are replacing human behavior at an exponential rate, driven by rapidly decreasing inference costs of large models and increased autonomy of agent systems, leading to machine-generated requests far exceeding human browsing. This is reshaping the entire internet's bandwidth allocation, content distribution, and business models.

Predictions always lag behind the true speed of exponential technologies.
Traffic is power; whoever controls machine traffic first will control the next generation of the internet.
When machines are more active than humans, the attention economy will completely shift to an algorithmic economy.
