Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, recalled in an interview that Kanye West called him at midnight, asking if he could come to a barbecue the next day and record in his home studio. Horowitz replied that he could come but mentioned he did not have a studio. The only response from Kanye was 'okay.'

The next day at 6:30 AM, Kanye's engineer called to confirm the studio specifications. Horowitz reiterated that he did not have a studio, to which the engineer responded that Kanye expected there to be one and insisted there must be a studio. In a more complete record of the interview, the engineer introduced himself as Noah. Horowitz then asked colleagues Chris and Nate if they knew anyone with a studio, and the name they provided was Howie.

When they called Howie, he was watching Netflix. When asked if the studio could be moved, he replied that it could. Horowitz said that the studio was then driven to his house and set up in a room. Kanye played them the Pablo album that day. The interview also mentioned that they played Push's album and a batch of materials from the Wyoming sessions. Horowitz referred to that day as a legendary day and mentioned that even more outrageous things happened afterward.

This recording comes from his interview with James Norman for Vintage x Vintage, with a16z releasing the segment on October 4, 2026. Pablo refers to The Life of Pablo, released in February 2016, which had working titles like So Help Me God, SWISH, and WAVES during its production.

The public interactions between Horowitz and Kanye can be traced back to the 2014 Cannes Lions Festival. The panel also included Steve Stoute, discussing topics such as technology, Steve Jobs, and Beats' acquisition by Apple. Horowitz co-founded a16z with Marc Andreessen in 2009; he previously co-founded Loudcloud, which was later renamed Opsware and sold to Hewlett-Packard for about $1.6 billion in 2007.

This is not a financing deal or album contract, but a relationship being replayed. The buyers are the podcast audience interested in founder stories and a16z's followers, while the sellers are the interview and fund accounts that hold this recording. No funds exchanged hands in this post; what flowed was access: a midnight call could change a CEO's barbecue schedule, and a portable studio could arrive that same morning. The beneficiaries are investment firms that treat cultural access as brand assets; the pressure is on formal studios that operate on appointments and venue schedules.

Horowitz did not explain how Kanye knew about the barbecue, nor did he clarify the roles of Chris, Nate, and Howie. The public version only confirmed the call, the lack of a studio, the borrowing of equipment, and the playback of Pablo that day.
