U.S. President Trump has ordered the General Services Administration (GSA) to remove Canadian products from federal government procurement projects, involving annual government contracts exceeding $50 billion.

This action specifically targets the GSA's "Multiple Award Schedules," which allows U.S. federal agencies to directly procure commercial products and services from a pre-approved list of suppliers, making it an important component of the U.S. federal procurement system.

Trump stated on Truth Social that he has instructed relevant officials to "take all necessary measures" to remove Canadian products from the agency's procurement list, and the GSA is currently collaborating with the U.S. Trade Representative's office to advance the implementation of this restriction.

The official reason given by Trump is that Canada has long restricted U.S. companies from competing in its government procurement market while allowing Canadian companies access to the U.S. government procurement market. He specifically mentioned that "Canada does not allow our great dairy farmers to enter the Canadian market" and accused Canada of "banning U.S. small businesses and companies from entering its government procurement market."

Trump also noted that similar procurement restrictions were previously imposed during his administration but were later restored by the Biden administration. This action is, in some ways, a reactivation of prior policies and the latest development in the ongoing trade friction between the U.S. and Canada, following Canada's implementation of reciprocal tariffs against the U.S.
