Amazon recruiters have sent letters to eligible former employees inviting them to discuss vacant positions in cloud computing and artificial intelligence, including some laid-off workers. An internal email referred to one initiative as Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative, corresponding to the AI agent organization led by AWS Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian.

The letter stated, "Many things have changed since you left," emphasizing the direction of AI and machine learning. Additionally, AWS finance recruitment offered a shortened interview process that could lead to hiring and inquired whether the return policy was a reason for the initial departure. Company spokesperson Haley Silva stated that rehiring former employees is a long-standing practice aimed at filling positions, not specifically to recover those who left due to return policies, and that office policies have not changed.

In the past year, the company has laid off over 30,000 positions in multiple rounds. This outreach did not disclose the number of contacts or acceptance rates, nor does it indicate a reversal of overall layoffs. External compensation data indicated that in March, "boomerang" employees accounted for 35% of new hires, up from 31% a year ago.

The competitive landscape includes Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic all vying for AI talent. Experienced hires avoid cultural and systems training, allowing for compressed interviews. The return policy still mentions a five-day notice, but some outreach is inquiring whether it is pressuring people.

From a market mechanism perspective, the company is selling labor familiar with internal toolchains and buying immediate capacity for AI and cloud positions. Funding is shifting from savings on severance packages to premiums for scarce skills; beneficiaries are former employees willing to return and teams lacking personnel, while those under pressure are recently laid-off employees whose skills are not on the AI list.
