AI Chip Startup Etched Announces $300 Million Series C Funding, Post-Money Valuation of $10.3 Billion
AI chip startup Etched has announced the completion of a $300 million Series C funding round, with a post-money valuation of $10.3 billion. Sequoia Capital led the round, with participation from a16z, SK Hynix, Jane Street, and others.
The company completed a $500 million funding round last December at a valuation of $5 billion, doubling its valuation in seven months. Its first chip has been successfully manufactured by TSMC, securing $1 billion in orders, and it currently has 400 employees and a 2-megawatt data center.
This funding event is driving capital into AI inference-specific hardware, with funds directed towards mass production and customer deployment, benefiting Etched and its supply chain, while general GPU manufacturers face pressure in the inference segment.

Etched was founded in 2022 by three Harvard dropouts, with co-founder and COO Robert Wachen starting on a friend's floor. The company completed significant funding last year and is advancing TSMC's chip production, focusing on AI inference rather than training.
The capital strategy emphasizes a full system solution rather than a single chip, optimizing both pre-filled compute-intensive stages and decoding memory-intensive stages, reducing latency and costs through low-voltage, high-density chips and clustered shared memory interconnects, aiming to capture the inference workload market.
Compared to dedicated inference chips like Groq and Cerebras, and NVIDIA's CUDA ecosystem barriers, Etched is in the expansion phase from prototype to mass production delivery, having received personal endorsements from individuals at Anthropic and OpenAI.
Essentially a technological alternative, the mechanism is driven by the explosive demand for inference, necessitating the emergence of dedicated hardware. The full system solution can bypass the power consumption and cost bottlenecks of general GPUs.
