Elon Musk stated that Tesla vehicles will soon have the capability to actively identify and avoid potholes on the road; existing public information does not provide specific rollout dates, applicable models, or regional scope.

The Tesla software update notes have listed "pothole avoidance" as a subsequent improvement project for FSD Supervised, alongside "extending reasoning capabilities to all driving behaviors beyond destination navigation." This feature is expected to enhance driving assistance software capabilities rather than introduce new vehicle hardware.

FSD Supervised currently can start from a parked state, execute lane changes, select navigation forks, navigate around vehicles and objects, turn, and reach destinations; Tesla still explicitly requires drivers to supervise at all times, remain attentive, and be ready to take over steering, braking, or accelerating immediately.

Pothole avoidance requires the system to simultaneously complete three tasks: the vision system identifies potholes under various lighting conditions, shadows, standing water, road repair marks, and vehicle speeds; the vehicle estimates the depth, location, and risk of the pothole; the control system decides to slow down, steer, or maintain the lane without crossing lines, conflicting with neighboring vehicles, or affecting traffic behind.

The current FSD system can already navigate around more obvious obstacles such as construction barrels, parked vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians in certain scenarios, but external tests and user videos also show that older hardware models may still inadequately respond to obstacles like road trunks and wood when running FSD Lite. Potholes are low, have irregular boundaries, and are easily affected by lighting, so actual performance must be validated with road data after the software release.

Tesla previously continued to advance FSD features in the summer 2026 update, including expanding the reasoning range beyond destination handling; "pothole avoidance" appears in the same subsequent feature list, indicating that this capability may be rolled out in phases through OTA updates rather than as a standalone product release.

From a market mechanism perspective, pothole avoidance itself will not directly incur separate charges, but if OTA updates improve suspension impact, tire rim damage, ride comfort, and user trust in FSD capabilities, it will enhance the conversion value of FSD subscriptions and one-time software purchases. The beneficiaries are Tesla owners with newer computing platforms, camera coverage, and the ability to receive full FSD features; older Hardware 3 vehicles that can only run a compressed version of FSD Lite may face product stratification pressure in terms of new capability coverage and performance. Tesla, through continuous software iteration, strengthens vehicle after-sales capabilities and overall differentiation, while traditional automakers that rely on hardware updates to increase functionality face comparative pressure.
