Elon Musk outlined executable rules for managing SpaceX after its growth during a long talk at Cheeky Pint. He publicly organized these insights into eight rules, noting that despite lacking a background in aerospace, the company is valued at around $2 trillion. His remarks focused on limiting factors, deadlines, and hiring, rather than cultural slogans.

The first rule is to only address limiting factors. Identify what is slowing the company down and allocate all time to it, while letting the smoothly operating parts run freely. With a fixed number of hours in a day, as business increases, time will inevitably be diluted, so it cannot be evenly monitored. The eighth rule brings urgency back to the individual: he claims to have a crazy sense of urgency that projects throughout the company. If the leader is slow, the company will be slow.

The second rule is to endure acute pain now to avoid long-term losses later. Most people prefer to endure slow pain to avoid a sharp decision. He requires the opposite: make painful decisions early. The sixth rule states that when the team is unwilling to make a decision, he steps in himself. The Starship was originally planned to use carbon fiber, but progress was slow. He pushed for a switch to steel, despite team resistance. His later statement was that not using steel was foolish. Carbon fiber is expensive, and even after mass production, costs would still approach material prices. He later publicly wrote about this, leading to the use of stainless steel, and eventually creating his own alloy, moving away from 301.

The third rule is to hire for teachable traits. Talent, drive, trustworthiness, and ambition cannot be changed; industry knowledge can be acquired later. Many early builders at SpaceX had no aerospace experience. The fourth rule is to trust dialogue, not resumes. If a 20-minute conversation feels normal, trust that 20 minutes. He looks for specific examples of independent problem-solving when no one provides a path.

The fifth rule is to set deadlines at a 50% confidence level. He seeks the most aggressive deadlines that still have a 50% chance of being met and accepts that half of the timeframes will be missed. The reasoning is that timelines will expand like gas, filling the time given. The seventh rule is to conduct in-depth reviews weekly, sometimes twice, without letting the team rehearse in advance. He uses cross-level questioning and room-circling inquiries to avoid pleasant reports, checking if each person's progress is converging.

This is not a new financing term. What is output is the founder's time allocation and decision-making authority, while the engineering team is stuck on a single process. The event is driven by the company's scale, which has grown too large to oversee everything. The beneficiaries are the selected limiting processes and those without aerospace resumes but with records of independent problem-solving. The pressure is on those adhering to outdated materials and sunk costs, as well as teams that rely on rehearsed reports to maintain progress.
