Apple hardware chief John Ternus to succeed CEO Cook in September

Apple announced that current CEO Tim Cook will step down from his position on September 1, transitioning to Executive Chairman of the Board, with Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus taking over as CEO. This transition has been unanimously approved by the Board and is based on long-term succession planning.

Cook, 65, joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011. During his tenure, the company's market value grew from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion, annual revenue increased from $108 billion to over $416 billion, and profits rose to over $110 billion. He also drove the services business to exceed $100 billion, while launching new product categories such as Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro, and services like Apple Pay.

Ternus, 50, joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2021. He has led hardware engineering for multiple generations of products including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods, and has driven innovations in new products like MacBook Neo and advancements in durability and materials.

At the same time, Johny Srouji will be promoted to Chief Hardware Officer, taking over the hardware engineering organization and hardware technology department previously managed by Ternus, unifying key technologies and product engineering for chips, batteries, cameras, sensors, etc. Arthur Levinson will transition from Non-Executive Chairman to Chief Independent Director, and Ternus will join the Board.

Jennifer Bailey, head of payment and wallet services, will retire in October after over 25 years at Apple. She has led the global expansion of the online store since 2003, became Vice President of Apple Pay in 2014, and oversaw the service's launch and subsequent expansion to over 80 markets, with more than 85% acceptance among U.S. retailers. She also managed Apple Wallet, Apple Card, fraud prevention, and partner operations, with Apple Pay's annual revenue estimated by analysts to exceed $7.5 billion.

Cook will continue as CEO until the end of summer to ensure a smooth transition. His new role will focus on communication with global policymakers. Bailey will announce a succession plan before her departure and will retain a consulting role, with management changes covering key positions in hardware, services, and the Board.

From a market mechanism perspective, this event is driven by long-term planning rather than a sudden crisis. Investors have strong expectations for continuity, and after the announcement, the stock price only experienced slight fluctuations, with overall capital remaining stable. The hardware engineering and high-profit services business will continue to benefit, while the new leadership must prove its execution capability amid AI competition and supply chain geopolitical pressures. Long-term holders and institutional funds are more inclined to observe the transition period's product roadmap implementation.
