BitmapPunks Confirms Main Contract Attack Damage and Will Redeploy

BitmapPunks CTO and co-founder FreeLunchCapital stated that after two weeks of assessment, it has been confirmed that the main accounting model was damaged by an attack and cannot be repaired. The only way to restore correct ownership is to redeploy the main contract.

The project is evaluating options for pure ERC-721 minting or ERC-20 airdrop paths, and is considering transferring tokens to a visionary team within the community while continuing to develop as a pixel art PFP project.

In terms of market mechanisms, BitmapPunks holders and NFT collectors have become the main responders, with event-driven funds flowing towards the new contract or airdrop expectations, benefiting project art supporters and potential takeover teams, while buyers after the attack are under pressure.

BitmapPunks, previously one of the largest PFP collections in history, continues to respond to the historical behavior of security vulnerabilities in complex designs following this attack. Similar contract vulnerability incidents earlier have reflected the governance challenges of decentralized projects.

In terms of capital pathways, the team is evaluating redeployment or airdrop and seeking takeovers, with strategic motives aimed at protecting the project's culture and artistic core, shifting resources from the damaged contract to pure art dissemination and new tool development.

Similar to other NFT projects that have been attacked and restarted, BitmapPunks is currently in a phase of transitioning from complex mechanisms to simplified artistic identity, with the attack serving as a catalyst for redefining the project.

Essentially a technical replacement, simplifying to ERC-721 or ERC-20 replaces the original complex design, prioritizing safety and repairability leads to functional trimming, shifting pricing power from mechanism innovation to community culture and artistic value, and pushing the NFT industry chain towards a pure artistic reconstruction in the AI era.

Project Resilience = Contract Complexity × Attack Recovery × Community Culture
Complex mechanisms sell innovation, simplified art sells permanence; those focused on PFP will navigate hacker cycles.
The more severe the attack, the more thorough the rebirth; counterintuitively, damage accelerates project identity reshaping and capital focus.
