President Donald Trump will award the National Medal of Science to Elon Musk at the White House summit on Thursday. Fox News Digital first reported this, and White House officials later confirmed it. This is the first time Trump has awarded the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation during his two terms.

Also receiving the National Medal of Science are Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su. Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The event is part of a White House gathering called the Science: A New Golden Age Summit.

The National Science Foundation defines the Medal of Science as the nation's highest honor for scientists and engineers. White House Assistant Press Secretary Liz Huston stated in an email that the government appreciates the contributions of these leaders in science and technology. The list of honorees has not yet been finalized in a formal ceremony.

The summit will also discuss reforms in the management and allocation of federal research funding. Technology advisor Michael Kratsios released a related proposal in July, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright and NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will also speak. Last month, Trump signed a voluntary superintelligence agreement with several tech company leaders, which includes internal oversight teams and independent audits, but is not mandatory.

Musk leads Tesla and SpaceX. He has donated over $290 million during the 2024 election cycle and later participated in federal employee reductions as a special government employee, publicly breaking with the president after leaving office. This award marks his return to the White House. On May 30, 2025, he received a golden key in the Oval Office.

Brin attended the inauguration and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Republican National Committee in 2025. Reports indicate that all the awardees on Thursday have contributed funds to Trump or Republican campaigns and related causes in some form.

This is a policy signal, not a corporate transaction. The buyers are tech companies hoping to maintain loose AI regulations and federal contracts, while the seller is the White House, treating the honor as a means to repair political distance. No funds have changed hands. Beneficiaries include Nvidia, AMD, Microsoft, Dell, and Musk's companies, while traditional research institutions face pressure from funding allocation reforms.
