At the D8 conference on June 1, 2010, Walt Mossberg asked Steve Jobs if the recently acquired Siri was meant to compete with Google in search. Jobs corrected him twice, stating that they would not label Siri as a search company; they are not in search, they are in artificial intelligence. Apple had no plans to enter the search business, as others were already doing well enough.

The acquisition occurred in April of that year. At that time, Siri was a personal assistant on the iPhone, handling OpenTable, flight data, and maps, with voice technology from Nuance, completing bookings and queries through dialogue rather than building its own index. It positioned itself as the next generation of interaction: search involves clicking on a link, while an assistant is about saying what you want to do, and it calls multiple services to get it done.

Jobs bought this layer of task assistance, not blue links. He did not use the term 'agent' on stage later. The watershed moment he drew was clear: search involves filtering and operations, while artificial intelligence listens to intent and gets things done. Search was explicitly excluded by him.

Siri launched with the iPhone 4S on October 4, 2011. The next day, Jobs passed away. Former employees later told the media that the vision died with him, and the company lacked a big picture. Internally, there were two factions: one aimed for quick and accurate answers, while the other wanted to handle complex tasks. Co-founder Norman Winarsky later stated that Apple transformed the original travel and entertainment concierge into a digital assistant for all users.

In the following decade, Siri lagged behind Google Assistant and Alexa in answer accuracy. It only opened up to third parties in 2016. The computing power and models at that time could not support the phrase 'artificial intelligence' on stage. Today, companies acting as agents are still competing over the same issue: staying on the results page or completing tasks.

This was a defining acquisition, not a search war. The buyer was Apple, which did not want to build its own index, and the seller was Siri, which could already handle bookings and flight inquiries. The event was driven by Mossberg interpreting the acquisition as a search move. The funding bought an assistant, not webpage rankings. Benefiting was Apple, which kept tasks on the phone, while under pressure was the search box, explicitly excluded but later still defined answers using links.
