South Korea Strengthens Regulation on Online Investment Stock Loans with a Single Borrowing Limit of 1 Billion Won

As the South Korean stock market rises, the stock loan business of online investment-related financial companies is rapidly expanding, prompting financial regulators to strengthen controls.

As of the end of June, the balance of online investment stock loans reached 898.3 billion won, an increase of 374.5 billion won in the first half of the year, surging 71.5% compared to the end of last year.

The Financial Supervisory Service requires that the monthly increase in stock loans must not exceed 30% of the newly added related loans from the previous month, with a single borrower limit set at 1 billion won, effective from August 16; if the month-end balance after July is maintained at the level of the end of June, exemptions may apply.

The tightening of regulatory mechanisms is aimed at reducing leverage risks, temporarily suppressing speculation in the stock market, and ensuring more cautious compliance in capital allocation.

South Korean regulators have repeatedly strengthened controls on leveraged businesses during periods of stock market rises, similar to past adjustments on margin trading, which aimed to prevent the accumulation of systemic risks through quota restrictions.

The expansion of loan business by online investment companies is constrained, with funds shifting from high-leverage stock loans to other assets, and institutions need to adapt to the new regulations strategically to maintain compliant operations.

Similar to the leverage regulation cycles in Asian markets, this round of rising stock prices in South Korea is accompanied by proactive regulatory interventions.

Essentially a risk prevention measure, South Korean regulators have set monthly increase limits on stock loans and single borrowing amounts, with the mechanism aimed at curbing excessive leverage to prevent risk accumulation, thereby maintaining financial stability and guiding capital towards sustainable investment.
