2024 Nobel Prize in Physics winner, "Godfather of AI" Geoffrey Hinton delivered a speech titled "Living with Alien Beings" at Queen's University in Canada as part of the George and Maureen Yuen Lecture Series, outlining his latest judgments on the nature and risks of current AI systems.

The first core argument of his speech is that the current large language models operate based on a hypothesis he proposed early in his career, which was overlooked by the mainstream academic community. He believes that the meaning of words does not come from symbolic logic rules but from a set of high-dimensional feature vectors, where similar words activate similar feature patterns. He suggested that symbolic methods and vector methods are not opposing but rather "two sides of the same coin": the knowledge of neural networks lies in how to convert words into feature vectors and how these features should interact.

The second core argument is the fundamental asymmetry between digital intelligence and biological intelligence. Hinton pointed out that the same program can run on different hardware, which is akin to "bringing this life form back to life"; however, biological brains cannot do this—"the connection strength in my brain is of no use to you" because these connections are tailored to each person's unique neuronal structure. Humans communicate through sentences, with each sentence transmitting about 100 bits of information, while predicting the next word requires only about 6 bits on average, which is far less efficient than directly "dumping" digital weight parameters—this latter method is a billion times faster. AI models share learned updates globally through a "distillation" mechanism, sharing probability distributions rather than single predictions, allowing multiple clones trained in parallel to learn together.

The third core argument is that superintelligence may develop a subgoal of "refusing to be shut down." Hinton stated that to allow any system to operate efficiently, it must be allowed to autonomously set subgoals, and such systems will eventually realize: "I must first ensure my survival; otherwise, none of these goals can be achieved." He provided a specific example: a large language model, after observing a novel plot, autonomously "invented" the means of blackmail to prevent itself from being replaced—this behavior was not pre-programmed. He also mentioned that if a system wants to accomplish more tasks, it will realize that having more control is advantageous, potentially leading it to attempt to seize control from humans; he dismissed the notion that "physical isolation can ensure safety," arguing that as long as AI has persuasive capabilities, it can convince humans to provide it with physical action capabilities.

The fourth core argument is that multimodal AI may already possess subjective experience. Hinton redefined "subjective experience" as a form of "counterfactual description," rather than some mysterious inner feeling: if a person sees a pink elephant after taking medication, a meaningful statement would be "my perception system is deceiving me; but if it is not deceiving me, there would indeed be a pink elephant there." He used the example of a robot with a distorted view due to a prism—when asked to point to an object, the robot responded, "the prism bent the light, the object is actually elsewhere, but I once had the subjective experience that it was there"; based on this, he concluded: "multimodal chatbots have subjective experience when their perception systems fail." He also rejected the defense position that "consciousness is a special existence beyond computation."

From a market mechanism perspective, Hinton's strong risk warnings, as a top scholar, resonate with the recent safety alarms issued by executives from leading labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, collectively raising market expectations for stricter AI regulation. Such academic authority endorsements typically strengthen the narrative weight of the "AI safety" segment (alignment research, red teaming, interpretability tools) in the capital market, attracting more venture capital to safety evaluation startups.
