Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicts that AI will not lead to large-scale permanent unemployment, but may instead bring about "an abundance of job opportunities." He believes that as long as AI is primarily used to enhance individual capabilities, invent new products, and establish new businesses, rather than simply replacing existing jobs, personal capability growth may keep pace with or even exceed the speed of automation.

Zuckerberg's argument is based on the premise that demand is not fixed. He points out that society's demand for new experiences, products, services, scientific discoveries, and personalized solutions theoretically has no upper limit; as AI lowers the barriers to starting companies, designing products, writing code, acquiring expertise, and entering markets, more people may become independent entrepreneurs, small studio operators, or highly leveraged professionals. The new jobs he envisions include personal biologists, virtual world builders, solo product studio designers, and micro-enterprises that utilize AI to accomplish tasks that previously required team collaboration.

He believes that computing resources are always limited, thus there is an opportunity cost to AI computing power: if companies use scarce computing entirely for automating existing jobs, they may achieve short-term cost reductions; if they use it for scientific research, drug development, product innovation, education, health, and entrepreneurship, they may create new markets, jobs, and income sources. Zuckerberg emphasizes that future employment outcomes depend on the allocation of resources between automation and personal empowerment, rather than being solely determined by AI technological capabilities.

This stance differs from the "job replacement warnings" of some AI industry leaders. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously warned that generative AI could impact a large number of entry-level white-collar jobs in the coming years; OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also discussed the potential for AI to cause significant restructuring in the labor market. Zuckerberg does not deny that AI will replace specific tasks and positions, but he rejects the premise that "most humans will lose economic relevance," arguing that concentrating superintelligence in a few institutions and allowing them to decide wealth distribution is a more dangerous societal path.

In market mechanisms, companies are buyers of automation capabilities, AI agents, and computing power, while workers, entrepreneurs, and small teams may become users of capability amplification tools. If AI is primarily used to cut customer service, administrative, entry-level programming, content creation, and analysis positions, wage shares may concentrate towards capital and platforms; if AI lowers the costs of starting businesses and providing professional services, the number of new jobs, independent operations, and small businesses may increase. Beneficiaries will depend on who owns the models, computing power, data, distribution channels, and AI skills; those under pressure will be positions with highly standardized work content but lacking domain knowledge, client relationships, or decision-making responsibilities.
