OpenAI Launches 'Computer Use' Feature for Codex, Supporting Cross-App Background Operations

OpenAI Developers announced that Codex has added a 'Computer Use' capability, allowing it to work across applications on Mac without taking over the entire system.

This feature supports the Agent's autonomous clicking and input, and runs continuously in the background. OpenAI's product lead Romain Huet discussed the paradigm shift in usage following the upgrade of Agent capabilities with AriX.

OpenAI previously launched inference models like o1 and o3 and gradually opened the Computer Use preview. The formal integration into Codex marks another key leap from chat-based AI to autonomous desktop Agents. Romain Huet, as the product lead, continues to push the Agent's expansion from browser tools to full system operations.

In terms of capital pathways, OpenAI is shifting model capability resources from pure text/code generation to real desktop control and multi-step execution. The motivation is to allow developers and enterprise users to directly embed Agents into daily workflows, enhancing productivity stickiness while paving the way for high-value scenarios for future subscriptions and enterprise Agent services.

Similar to competitors like Anthropic Claude Computer Use and Cursor, the current AI Agent industry is transitioning from single-task execution to persistent background cross-app collaboration. This Codex feature directly lowers the deployment threshold for enterprises.

Essentially, this represents a technological substitution: desktop operations are shifting from manual execution to AI Agent autonomous delegation. The breakthrough in 'click-input-background running' capabilities overcomes traditional API limitations, enabling Agents to handle unstructured interfaces. In the long term, this will shift software usage pricing power from manual user operations to AI orchestration capabilities, accelerating the concentration of capital from traditional productivity tools to autonomous Agent platforms.

The true evolution of Agents is not faster responses, but the ability to complete tasks for you in the background. When AI learns to 'click and wait,' productivity shifts from your time to its time. The less a tool interrupts you, the more you rely on it; control shifts from manual operation to quiet delegation.
