Elon Musk's long-term bet on robots is not a temporary narrative. Tesla first publicly announced the Optimus program in 2021, positioning it as a humanoid robot capable of handling repetitive, dangerous, or undesirable tasks; subsequently, the company migrated its visual perception, end-to-end neural networks, batteries, motor control, supply chain, and automotive manufacturing capabilities to robot development. Musk's core path is to first train embodied AI capabilities using cars, and then extend the same perception-decision-execution framework to physical labor scenarios for humanoid robots.

From a capital perspective, humanoid robots are not just about selling hardware. Once deployed in factories, warehouses, logistics, and retail, their value comes from replacing or augmenting labor hours, reducing the risk of workplace injuries and downtime, improving nighttime operational capabilities, and generating ongoing revenue from software upgrades, maintenance, leasing, and task scheduling. Funding initially flows to actuators, reducers, servo control, cameras, force sensors, batteries, edge computing, and simulation training; ultimately, whoever controls the deployment site, maintenance network, and task data will be able to convert hardware sales into long-term cash flow.

A historical analogy is the proliferation of industrial robots in the automotive manufacturing industry. KUKA, FANUC, ABB, and Yaskawa initially established commercialization in fixed positions, repetitive actions, and safety enclosure scenarios, and then expanded to welding, painting, handling, and assembly. The difference with humanoid robots is that they attempt to adapt to human-designed stairs, door handles, shelves, tools, and workspaces without needing to rebuild factories; however, this also raises the reliability requirements for perception, grasping, balance, safety, and anomaly handling far above those of traditional robotic arms. The industry is still in a transition period from demonstrating capabilities to validating unit economics and large-scale deployment.

Essentially, this is about technological substitution. Rising labor costs, an aging population, and shortages of service industry jobs provide demand-side momentum, while AI vision and reinforcement learning lower decision-making costs in unstructured environments, and the scaling of motors, batteries, and sensors reduces hardware costs. True substitution will not start with "robots completely replacing humans" but will begin with quantifiable tasks such as night shift handling, warehouse picking, simple assembly, inspection, and hazardous operations; when the full lifecycle cost of a single robot per hour is lower than the total cost of the labor it can replace, capital expenditure will convert into actual procurement by enterprises.
