The founder of the digital nomad community website Nomads.com, Pieter Levels, recently announced the launch of a new timeline feature on the site. Users can view updates from other members through the "For You" (recommended) and "Following" (followed) tabs, a design inspired by the information flow format of X (formerly Twitter).

The core of the new feature is to allow members to see "who is near you" and the travel destinations that all members are currently and will be visiting. Levels stated that this enables users to plan trips to cities where other members will be arriving, creating more "serendipitous connections"; under the "For You" tab, users can also see where their followed friends will appear next.

Nomads.com was formerly known as Nomad List, which was founded and independently operated by Levels in 2014 without any external funding, with him being the sole team member for a long time. According to public data, the website disclosed an annualized revenue of approximately $5.3 million in November 2024, with a user base of about 29,000; before transitioning to a free model, the site had a total of about 43,252 paid members, averaging about 300 new paid users per month over approximately 12 years.

In September 2026, Levels announced on his personal blog that Nomad List/Nomads.com, which had been operating for ten years, would officially be free for everyone, eliminating the previous monthly membership fees of $299, $99, and $29. He mentioned that under the previous pricing model, the $299 tier added about 50 members per month, the $99 tier about 200, and the $29 tier about 400—indicating that higher prices led to slower growth, and subscription fees themselves posed a "man-made limitation" on community size; the newly launched timeline feature is one of the first new features introduced after the site transitioned to free access.

Regarding future monetization methods, Levels stated that the website would mainly rely on sponsorships from brands like SafetyWing for operational support, rather than membership subscription fees, describing this as "a model more suited for the future"; he also mentioned that in the context of general artificial intelligence (AGI) potentially leading to social isolation, the community itself has a stronger "moat" compared to most of his SaaS products, which is the core logic behind his bet on community size rather than subscription income.

From a business logic perspective, this path of "expanding scale for free, then monetizing through sponsorship" essentially replaces the subscription income previously collected from about 43,000 paid members with sponsorship and collaboration fees from brands like SafetyWing, shifting revenue sources from C-end subscriptions to B-end sponsors. Given that the website has long operated without external funding and with only one person, the marginal cost is extremely low, and opening up for free will not create direct cash flow pressure; rather, it may allow for higher sponsorship negotiation space through user base expansion. For potential sponsoring brands, a community that expands from 43,000 paid members to being free for all digital nomads means an opportunity to reach a larger, more precise customer base; for similar paid travel communities and nomad forums, Nomads.com’s shift to free access poses competitive pressure, potentially forcing them to reassess subscription pricing or differentiation strategies.
