Promptwatch monitoring shows that Reddit's share in ChatGPT Search citations dropped from an average of 3.83% from July 18 to August 7, to an average of 0.52% from August 14 to 17, a relative decline of 86.4%.

On August 14, Reddit's citation share fell below 1% in a single day, having previously retreated from the high 3% range to the mid 2% range since August 8; Promptwatch marked these two turning points as ChatGPT adjusting its query fan-out behavior and the subsequent cliff-like drop.

Query fan-out is the mechanism by which AI search breaks a single user question into multiple sub-queries, retrieves from different sources, and synthesizes answers. Independent monitoring found that ChatGPT's average fan-out query count recently rose to 7.61 times, a 250% increase from about 2.17 times previously, with a maximum of 29 sub-queries possible in a single instance.

Promptwatch stated that Google AI Overviews and Reddit citations in AI Mode are also declining, but by about 11% to 30%, showing a more gradual trend; ChatGPT's 86.4% drop is more closely related to changes in its own source retrieval or selection logic.

Reddit has not disclosed any policy adjustments affecting content crawlability, indexing, or licensing during the same period, and OpenAI has not explained the changes in citation structure. Promptwatch clearly indicates that the data comes from its own aggregated monitoring, and factors such as sample composition, query set changes, or statistical methods cannot be completely ruled out, thus "OpenAI actively reducing Reddit's weight" remains a highly relevant inference, not a confirmed causal relationship.

In market mechanisms, Reddit relies on search and AI answer exposure to gain traffic supply for users, ad displays, content creators, and community growth; ChatGPT Search controls question splitting, retrieval, and citation presentation, serving as a new distribution entry point. The sharp decline in citation share will weaken Reddit's visibility from AI search and remind content platforms, brands, and media: Google ranking does not guarantee AI search citations, and adjustments to a single model's retrieval parameters can redistribute traffic. Beneficiaries are sources that can cover more long-tail sub-questions, provide clear original information, and structured pages; those under pressure are platforms that view AI traffic as a stable natural traffic channel.
