Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has pledged that if the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery is completed, the merged studios will release at least 30 films in theaters each year; this commitment is a core condition for gaining support from theaters and the industry for the deal.

Ellison promised theater owners at CinemaCon that the combined entity would maintain a minimum of 30 theatrical releases annually. Paramount has signed written agreements with some theater operators for a three-year commitment, attempting to turn verbal promises into executable distribution arrangements after the deal is finalized.

According to current plans, Paramount and Warner Bros. will collectively release 28 films nationwide this year, with 36 scheduled for 2027, including sequels to "A Quiet Place" and "Superman." The existing slate makes it relatively easy to achieve the 30-film target in the first year post-merger, but the real pressure will be whether they can continue to develop, produce, and release projects in subsequent years.

Industry concerns focus on debt and project supply. If the deal is completed, the merged entity will need to take on nearly $80 billion in debt; the studios must cut costs, integrate organizations, and service debt while continuing to invest in script development, production, global marketing, and theatrical distribution, which creates a direct conflict between the 30-film target and financial discipline.

The number of releases does not equate to profitability in the theater business. Paramount plans to increase its release count from 8 films in 2025 to 15 this year, but the company has warned Wall Street that due to declining average ticket sales, even with an increase in released films, theater revenues may still see a significant year-over-year decline; this means the 30-film target needs to be supported by higher overall box office, controlled budgets, or lower marketing costs.

From a market mechanism perspective, the main beneficiaries are chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark that need stable content to fill their schedules, as well as independent filmmakers competing for distribution resources; the merged entity could leverage a higher release volume to gain theater support and stronger negotiating power for scheduling. The parties under pressure are smaller theaters and independent distributors: if large merged studios concentrate control over more IP, release windows, and marketing budgets, the latter's bargaining power for prime slots and box office splits may further decline.
