The crypto community is once again focusing on the unusual deaths of five major fund holders: Vyacheslav Taran, founder of Forex and crypto brokerage; Harry Yeh, founder of Quantum Financial Technology; Nikolai Mushegian, an early core developer of MakerDAO; Tiantian Kullander, co-founder of Amber Group; and Gerald Cotten, founder of QuadrigaCX. The five cases occurred near the Italy-France border, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, sudden death in sleep, and India, with official conclusions differing from market rumors.

Taran died on November 25, 2022, when an Airbus EC130/H130 crashed while flying from Lausanne, Switzerland, to Monaco, near Villefranche-sur-Mer and Eze in France. He was 53 years old, and the pilot also died. He was a co-founder and chairman of Forex Club and Libertex Group, and served as a director at the crypto platform YouHodler. At the time of the incident, reports indicated that the weather was acceptable, and another passenger had canceled before takeoff. A subsequent report from the French aviation safety investigation pointed to a sudden drop in visibility due to coastal fog and found cocaine in the pilot's system, along with CBD, THC, and alcohol. The Russian embassy confirmed his death. The Russian central bank had previously revoked his forex license for violations.

Yeh fell from the 30th floor of the Jade Park apartment in Asunción at dawn on August 7, 2026, with his body found naked and covered with a black bag. Prosecutors found the door to the suite open and the interior in disarray, and collected evidence from a related suite on the 27th floor. The autopsy indicated multiple blunt force trauma consistent with a high fall, with no gunshot or sharp force injuries, and toxicology tests could not be completed. The city police chief reported that property staff had seen a foreign resident walking around naked the day before the fall. Quantum stated that it manages assets exceeding $2.4 billion, with investments including Fantom and Tomb Finance. The investigation has not concluded, and police have suggested hypotheses of mental or drug imbalance, without ruling out other possibilities.

Mushegian, 29, posted on October 28, 2022, claiming that intelligence agencies and criminal groups would frame and kill him. Hours later, his body was found by surfers at Ashford Beach in San Juan, dressed and with a wallet. Local police initially found no signs of violent death, with a small fracture on his skull; the beach is known for its strong currents and frequent drownings. He was an early technical contributor to the Dai stablecoin on MakerDAO, co-founder of Balancer, and involved with BitShares and rai. San Juan police stated they would not treat it as a homicide, and the investigation is ongoing. Kullander, 30, died unexpectedly in his sleep on November 23, 2022. Amber issued a statement without disclosing medical details, claiming that the non-homicide assertion came only from the company. He had previously worked as a trader at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, co-founding Amber in 2017, which had a valuation of about $3 billion in its last funding round, and served as a director at Fnatic, having also founded KeeperDAO. His widow and young child survive him. The company was still pursuing new financing at the time of his death.

Cotten, 30, died on December 9, 2018, in Jaipur, India, due to complications from Crohn's disease and septic shock, according to his wife, with the exchange only informing customers over a month later. Approximately 115,000 customers faced about $190 million to $250 million CAD in assets that could not be withdrawn, as the cold wallet keys were reportedly only held by him. Ernst & Young, as the restructuring monitor, later found that the identified Bitcoin cold wallet had been emptied as early as April 2018, and another address had a zero balance after a transfer on December 3, making it difficult to match the claimed large cold storage. The company continued to accept deposits after the death was announced, later applying for creditor protection. The theory of a fake death with funds has long existed, but public materials have not verified any authoritative records of him still being alive.

In market mechanisms, buyers are those who need to turn private keys, licenses, and market-making inventory into liquid assets, while sellers are platforms that concentrate control in the hands of founders. After the five cases, funds immediately faced freezing, runs, or inability to prove custody. The events are driven by the combination of death with key and license structures. Beneficiaries are those who can implement multi-signature, independent custody, and public audits; the pressured parties are brokers and funds that hold cold wallets or offline channels in a single person's hands. The investigation conclusions can reduce the evidence density of the "murdered" narrative but cannot reduce the asset withdrawal issues caused by single points of failure.
