Apple iOS 27 Allows Users to Choose Third-Party AI Models like Claude and Gemini

Apple will open system-level AI model selection in iOS 27, allowing users to directly choose third-party large models such as Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini to drive various AI functions on their devices.

This move covers core features including Siri, smart writing, image generation, and photo editing, enabling users to switch the default model in settings without needing additional apps. This marks Apple's transition from proprietary Apple Intelligence to an open ecosystem, allowing users to mix and match different models based on their needs.

Apple has relied on self-developed models and partnerships with OpenAI since the launch of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024. The comprehensive opening of third-party model selection in iOS 27 continues this historical strategy, similar to the past opening of the App Store to third-party apps and the compromise of iMessage with RCS. A limited testing of model switching interfaces was previously conducted in iOS 26.

From a capital perspective, Apple reduces the pressure of self-developed computing power by opening model access, while converting user data and preferences on devices into traffic for models like Claude and Gemini. Revenue from profit-sharing or cooperation agreements will form a new income source, aiming to maintain the iOS ecosystem barrier and accelerate the penetration of AI features.

Similar to how Google Android has long supported third-party AI assistants and Samsung's deep integration with Google, Apple is currently in a mature phase of transitioning its closed iOS from "proprietary AI first" to "user sovereignty + coexistence of multiple models."

Essentially, this is a restructuring of the industry chain: Apple is transforming AI capabilities from a vertically closed system to a horizontally open platform through a system-level model selection interface, shifting the burden of massive training costs from itself to ecological cooperation and traffic distribution. Mechanically, this enhances device stickiness through user choice while forcing AI model vendors to compete for distribution channels on Apple devices.

The best platform is not the one that is strongest itself, but the one that allows users to easily choose the most suitable option.
The longer the closure, the more the control of the ecosystem can be transformed into new income sources upon opening.
User choice is not a concession but turns AI competition into a long-term moat for the platform.
