The American Broadcasting Company has sued the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in response to challenges against ABC's local television broadcast licenses.

The lawsuit follows ongoing pressure from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr on ABC. Carr has previously exerted regulatory pressure regarding the content of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and the program "The View," and has pushed for a review of ABC's affiliated television station licenses.

The controversy centers on the fact that the broadcast licenses issued by the FCC are held by local licensed television stations, not by the ABC national television network itself. ABC's parent company, Disney, owns and operates eight local television stations, and the risk to licenses primarily falls on the renewal and compliance reviews of these owned stations.

The FCC's intervention in program content coincides with former President Trump's criticism of program hosts and ABC's reporting. Trump has publicly called for the revocation of ABC and NBC's broadcast licenses, accusing the networks of having a systematic negative bias in their reporting.

ABC's lawsuit will shift the dispute from administrative regulation to judicial proceedings, potentially involving whether the FCC can impose adverse effects on local television license renewals based on program speech or political criticism; the broadcast license system requires regulatory agencies to review based on public interest standards and cannot directly conflate national network programming with local licensed entities.
