Pinata promotes IPFS upload retrieval with dedicated gateways

Pinata is promoting its IPFS storage service, allowing developers to upload files and obtain a CID, which can then be retrieved through a dedicated gateway, positioning itself as an easy IPFS access layer for developers.

The core of the product is to provide a managed service for IPFS pinning, retrieval, and HTTP bridging. After users hand over files to Pinata, the counterpart nodes pin them and generate content-addressable identifiers, while browsers and apps use the dedicated gateway to pull data, rather than relying on congested public gateways. The gateway can be restricted to only serve CIDs pinned by the account to prevent bandwidth abuse by outsiders.

The company was founded in 2018 by Kyle Tut and Matt Ober at the ETHBerlin hackathon, headquartered in Omaha. In 2022, it completed a total of $21.5 million in seed and Series A funding, led by Greylock, Pantera, and Offline Ventures, with follow-on investments from Volt Capital, OpenSea, and Alchemy. On the client side, it has served OpenSea, Yuga Labs, DraftKings, Protocol Labs, etc., claiming to have pinned over 100 million files at its peak.

The revenue model includes a free tier plus paid pinning, dedicated gateways, image resizing, video streaming, and content gating. Public reports indicate that revenue was approximately $1.9 million in 2022, projected to be around $8.8 million by the end of 2024. The team size has remained small for a long time, with valuations previously noted in the range of $50 million to $100 million. Recently, the product line has also extended to AI agent hosting.

The instability of public IPFS gateways and the risk of content loss if nodes do not continuously pin data are the reasons for Pinata's existence. The dedicated gateway, combined with a global CDN and about 200 node locations, aims to make the reading experience of decentralized storage close to that of centralized CDNs. Developers are purchasing the combination of "fixed CID and fast retrieval" rather than operating their own IPFS nodes.

In terms of market mechanisms, buyers include NFT markets, blockchain games, and developers needing to store large files off-chain; the selling side consists of Pinata's pinning capacity, gateway bandwidth, and value-added APIs. Funds flow from project parties and users' monthly fees to managed nodes and CDNs, with Pinata benefiting from simplifying protocol complexity into a SaaS model; public IPFS gateways and self-built node solutions are under pressure. The event itself is about customer acquisition for the product, not a new round of financing or acquisition.
