OpenAI announced that due to Cursor being acquired by SpaceX, it plans to terminate direct model provision to the programming tool on November 12, 2026. The reason cited is a lack of confidence that SpaceX will adhere to service terms based on past experiences with Elon Musk's company. The contract includes a limited termination window after a change of control, and the company stated it has provided notice at the maximum limit, and will not provide subsequent models Astra to Cursor.

Cursor CEO Michael Truell stated that OpenAI models account for about 5% of the product's user traffic and that they are in communication with OpenAI. SpaceX acquired Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, in a $60 billion all-stock deal in June, completing the transaction earlier this month. Musk responded that he is indifferent.

Hours later, Anthropic co-founder and head of computing Tom Brown wrote that Cursor has been a trusted partner since Claude Sonnet 3.5 and will continue to increase computing power to support the Claude model in Cursor, expressing excitement about the next steps with SpaceX. Reuters described this as increasing computational support for Cursor after OpenAI cuts supply.

This is not the first time a lab has switched interfaces due to an acquirer. In 2025, when there were rumors of OpenAI potentially acquiring Windsurf, Anthropic cut off direct access to Claude for that product, with some management stating that selling Claude to OpenAI would seem strange. Anthropic currently has a computing power leasing partnership with SpaceX. As a result, developer tools have shifted from a multi-model neutral pipeline to contracts rewritten with changes in control.

OpenAI emphasized that its collaboration with Cursor has lasted nearly four years, and the decision is based on governance risks and future model accountability post-acquisition, rather than a denial of the product itself. Before the cut-off date, models can still be switched within the editor, but new generation capabilities are explicitly excluded. Once the 5% traffic interface is closed, the default path will further lean towards suppliers who are still increasing quotas.

In market mechanics, the buyer is the developer who has embedded workflows into Cursor, while the seller is the lab renting out models as infrastructure. The event was triggered by the change of control clause. Funding and token usage will shift from the OpenAI interface to Claude quotas and proprietary models within the SpaceX system. Benefiting from this is Anthropic, which can increase presence in the same editor, while the application layer that relied on a neutral pipeline faces pressure.
