The Mexican Federal Prosecutor's Office, Navy, and Puebla state police seized an illegal cryptocurrency mining facility in a remote building in the Traula mountainous area of the state. Approximately 300 GPUs, 80 medium-voltage terminals, a transformer, and 8 satellite antennas were found on-site, with the equipment still operational.

Authorities are investigating whether the site was stealing electricity from the nearby federal hydroelectric system, particularly the grid related to the New Necaxa Dam. Francisco Sánchez, head of public safety in Puebla, stated that mining consumes a large amount of electricity and generates high noise, prompting operators to choose isolated locations; the massive power intake and equipment noise serve as clues for location. Local residents reported that the noise could be heard from about one kilometer away, and the mining site is approximately twice that distance from the nearest village.

This is the fourth such facility discovered in the area since early last year. Three others were previously seized near hydroelectric plants in northern Puebla, one of which reportedly tapped into the federal power grid using properties related to the electrical workers' union. The state government is collaborating with neighboring states to investigate more hidden sites, and the Federal Electricity Commission is also involved in the investigation.

Mexican security analyst David Saucedo noted that establishing such operations requires technical expertise and support from well-funded groups, suggesting that drug trafficking organizations have reached a new level of sophistication. Caio Motta, a Latin America expert at Chainalysis, pointed out that such sites typically fall within areas of very low electricity prices or organized crime control zones to facilitate electricity theft and deploy large-scale mining rigs. Authorities are also investigating whether the mined virtual assets are being used to launder illegal funds; the Federal Prosecutor's Office declined to comment due to the ongoing investigation.

Mining itself does not constitute an independent crime in Mexico; the main issues are federal-level electricity theft and potential illegal financial operations. The GPU configuration is more aligned with cryptocurrencies that can still be mined using graphics cards, rather than typical ASIC Bitcoin mining operations. Energy expert Samuel Leon stated that if electricity costs are stolen, the maximum operational cost is nearly zero. The CFE previously reported that from January to July 2024, non-technical losses amounted to approximately 6,346 GWh, valued at around 13.8 billion pesos.

From a market mechanism perspective, this is an event-driven incident where the cost structure is violently rewritten, not a protocol hash rate cycle. The buyer is underground funds needing to convert cash into transferable hash power output; the seller is the utility being siphoned off electricity and surrounding legitimate users. The beneficiaries are operators who can erase electricity costs from their books; the pressured parties are the CFE, communities near hydroelectric hubs, and compliant mining operations — which must purchase electricity at market rates and cannot compete with zero-cost facilities. The flow of funds is "ill-gotten gains — electricity theft — tokens — on-chain transfer," rather than public mining pool expansion.
