Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham shared a 2×2 matrix, with the horizontal axis representing true and false, and the vertical axis representing intentional and unintentional, resulting in four states: intentional and true is smart, intentional and false is dishonest, unintentional and true is lucky, and unintentional and false is foolish. The accompanying text simply states "four ways of existence." The matrix itself does not present new data or company actions.

Graham has long discussed entrepreneurial judgment through short essays and tables, including how to distinguish between being smart and appearing smart, as well as post hoc rationalization. This time, he distilled epistemology into four words, separating the outcome from moral accusations of "whether one knows what they are doing." Intentionally telling the truth is labeled as intelligence, intentionally telling a lie is labeled as character, and accidentally being right versus accidentally being wrong is labeled as luck and intelligence. The table forces readers to first ask about intent, then about truth.

In entrepreneurship and investment, results are often treated as capabilities. Luck may be written off as foresight, foolishness as fraud, and dishonesty may be framed as narrative during a bull market. The four boxes narrow the escape routes of post hoc narratives: if right, one must explain whether it was a guess; if wrong, one must explain whether it was intentional. Y Combinator's batch reviews, board minutes, and regulatory hearings all use the same set of distinctions, though rarely presented in table form.

The boxes do not generate new facts but dictate how to label old facts. Once labels circulate, the reputation market prices them according to the boxes.

The market mechanism is cognitive labeling. Buyers are investors and founders who need to quickly classify their counterparts; sellers are essayists who turn judgment frameworks into shareable cards. Capital does not flow in this post; what flows are citations and internal jargon. Beneficiaries are those who can explain failures as lucky outcomes; those under pressure are those whose results are correct but cannot clarify their intent. Event-driven analysis is a table, not a funding round.

Truth and falsehood are results; intention and unintentionality are motives. The four words lay both out simultaneously, shortening the post hoc story.
