Y Combinator Summer 2026 batch company Lumeria, founded by Maryanne Alhallak and Anthea Guo, has launched the Lumoscope, a multispectral camera that attaches to smartphones. It claims to allow users to scan their skin at home using visible light, ultraviolet, and polarized light, revealing early acne and sun damage that are not visible in the mirror. The scans score hydration, redness, texture, sebum, etc., accumulating into a personal skin profile, with the software Lumi matching products based on individual data rather than population averages.

The hardware is currently available for pre-order at $299, down from the original price of $329, with shipments scheduled for September to October 2026. A Premium subscription costs $10 per month or $100 per year, with the first three months free and the option to cancel anytime. The free tier retains access to each scan and direct metrics. The pre-order period from August 13 to August 16 offers a limited-time price of $199. The company claims to collaborate with two dermatology clinics, with imaging covering different skin tones, and data is encrypted by default, stating that it provides monitoring and insights but does not constitute a diagnosis.

Alhallak serves as CEO, with a background in bioengineering and economics from Berkeley, having been admitted at age 15. She describes her background as a Syrian refugee and published a book at age 9. She has previously exited a biotech startup after about a year and generated over $40,000 in beauty content that garnered over ten million views in two to three months. Guo is the CTO, with a background in electrical engineering, computer science, and bioengineering from Berkeley. She previously led the Google DeepVariant collaboration team and worked on high-performance pipelines at Boehringer Ingelheim, as well as mobile pulse collection. Guo recounts that she experienced eczema for five months before seeing a dermatologist and had four misdiagnoses, at one point being allergic to her own sweat; her sister discovered that carpet dust was the trigger for her eczema after eight years.

The product path is outlined in three steps: scanning with the device, AI querying environmental and care changes, and providing trends and recommendations. Official metrics include surface gloss, sebum-related reflection, evenness, redness, pigmentation, texture, pore size, and skin health indices over 7, 30, and 90 days. Ultraviolet light is used for pigmentation and sebum fluorescence, while polarized light is used for texture and morphology. The company positions itself as the Oura ring for the skin: a wearable device for continuous recording rather than a one-time selfie filter.

The YC application was submitted 30 seconds before the deadline, and an interview in San Francisco occurred a month later. The timeline within the batch was compressed to monthly hardware pre-order deliveries. The goal is to provide comparable imaging between two clinic visits, shifting product recommendations from population averages to individual time series.

The market mechanism involves a one-time hardware fee plus a subscription. The target consumers are those tired of trial-and-error skincare who are willing to pay $299 for repeatable measurements; the selling point is Lumeria's clinic-sourced spectral narrative replacing shelf trials.
