The grok.bot domain website publicly called out to xAI, stating that it purchased the domain a month before xAI launched Grok Bot and is seeking to sell it for $1 million.

The website claims that the owner, due to losses in cryptocurrency investments and an impending motherhood, hopes xAI will purchase the domain; this is a unilateral statement from the domain owner, with no public confirmation, counteroffer, or initiated acquisition negotiations from xAI.

xAI recently launched Grok Bot, positioned as a continuously operating AI agent product: each agent can have an independent cloud computing environment and execute multi-step tasks in websites, applications, emails, and work scenarios. The product name forms a direct commercial association with the grok.bot domain.

The domain owner describes the purchase time as one month before the product launch, intending to prove that their registration occurred before the public appearance of the "Grok Bot" product name; however, the key to domain disputes often lies not only in the registration date but also includes prior trademark rights, whether the registrant is using it in good faith, the potential for confusion, and whether there is an improper demand for compensation targeting the brand's goodwill.

"Grok" is not a newly emerged generic term, but xAI has long used Grok as its AI product brand. The name entered the English tech media context when xAI publicly launched its chatbot in 2023, so even if grok.bot was registered before the Grok Bot product launch, it does not automatically eliminate potential trademark and malicious registration disputes.

In domain transactions, $1 million is closer to a "brand defensive acquisition" rather than a typical domain valuation. If xAI believes that the domain could cause user confusion, phishing risks, loss of search traffic, or affect product uniform entry, it may choose to negotiate a purchase; if it determines that the registration has an intention to exploit goodwill or extort, it could consider seeking transfer through domain dispute resolution procedures instead of paying the quoted price.

From a market mechanism perspective, the expansion of AI companies will increase the scarcity premium for short domains, product-named domains, and specific top-level domains; the buyer is a product company needing a unified brand entry, reduced security risks, and controlled search traffic, while the seller is an early registrant and domain investor. Beneficiaries are those holding scarce domains that can prove good faith use and align with the brand; those under pressure are those who rely on registering after public brand releases and demanding high prices, as the latter are more likely to face trademark complaints and transfer risks.
