Fred Ehrsam seeks to take over Venezuelan oil fields

Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam is reportedly seeking control of at least three oil blocks in Venezuela, amid U.S. efforts to restructure the country's oil operating rights.

The target assets are located in the Orinoco heavy oil belt of Venezuela, involving the Boca, Guico, and Guara blocks; this area holds one of the largest reserves of heavy crude oil in the world, but development heavily relies on diluents, upgrading facilities, export channels, and ongoing capital investment.

The aforementioned blocks are currently operated by Alvorada Heavy Industries Ltda. Sources say U.S. officials are considering revoking the company's contracts in the relevant blocks to make way for new operators; negotiations are not yet public, and there are no completed asset transfers or formal changes in control.

The report places Ehrsam's potential bid within the context of Washington's process to replace some Maduro-era oil field operators, with potential acquirers described as investors closely tied to the Trump camp. The decision on the deal depends not only on commercial valuation but also on U.S. sanction permissions, the validity of Venezuelan contracts, and political authorization.

Ehrsam is known for co-founding Coinbase, and his shift from cryptocurrency trading platform entrepreneur to seeking control of oil assets suggests that digital asset capital may enter the realm of physical resources governed by geopolitical and sanction rules; the report does not disclose the acquisition entity he plans to use, the amount to be invested, sources of financing, partners, or specific arrangements with the Venezuelan state oil company.

In market mechanisms, potential buyers are seeking discounted upstream resource rights amid policy restructuring, while the sellers or replaced parties are existing operators and their contract rights holders.
