The head of OpenAI Codex stated that the team is streamlining and currently focusing on four areas: simplification, supporting more usage with higher efficiency, breakthrough features, or new models.

He acknowledged that sometimes it is necessary to invest ahead of the curve, but user feedback has clearly indicated a desire for simplicity. The post was made on October 4, without providing a list of features, launch dates, or team size. The day before, he had mentioned that future models would be better at code deletion and simplification.

The same account also addressed load issues this week. Codex and ChatGPT were under high load at the time, and the team stated that they had added more capacity, with speeds expected to improve within hours, approaching nearly double the speed provided the previous day. This streamlining combines capacity issues with product direction: first ensuring existing usage can run smoothly, then deciding what can enter the development list.

Sottiaux's previously disclosed engineering principle is to dismantle the scaffolding outside the agent. He believes that complex orchestration is a way of coping, not expanding. Simple primitives can scale with model capabilities. He also described the direction for long tasks as relying less on external compression and more on the model itself maintaining tasks across windows.

Among the four areas of work, simplification and efficiency respond to existing users, while breakthrough features and new models represent ahead-of-time investments. He did not mention halting research, only excluding demands not within these four categories from the current work list. Feedback is treated as a sorter, rather than a roadmap itself.

In market mechanisms, buyers are developers paying for usage volume and invocation counts, while sellers are Codex's reasoning capacity. The driving event is usage hitting load limits, not a new round of financing. Resources are being withdrawn from peripheral features and directed towards deletion, unit usage costs, and the next tier of models. Heavy users who need stable speeds benefit, while workflows relying on niche entry points and complex configurations are under pressure.
