Joe Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of Consensys, stated that the era where money "belongs to institutions rather than individuals" is coming to an end, with self-custody entering the mainstream and stablecoins becoming internet-native currencies.

Lubin is also the head of Consensys, the company behind MetaMask, and serves as the chairman of SharpLink, an Ethereum treasury company. He has long positioned MetaMask as a fully functional entry point for users to hold their own keys, rather than entrusting assets to exchanges. Consensys has developed Linea as a permissionless rollup, emphasizing that anyone can deploy applications on it.

In previous interviews, he mentioned that banks are being forced to compete with self-custody wallets, and that the U.S. might absorb national debt and extend the lifespan of the dollar through stablecoins. He described the mission of the Ethereum Foundation as one of platform sovereignty and individual sovereignty, focusing on censorship resistance, open-source, privacy, and security. MetaMask has expanded its debit card pilot from the U.S. to more merchants, allowing users to spend directly from self-custody wallets.

Stablecoins and self-custody are expanding in parallel. The Bank for International Settlements stated that the market value of fiat-backed stablecoins is expected to be around $320 billion by the end of May 2026, with approximately 99.4% pegged to the U.S. dollar. Research shows that about 75% of USDC and 70% of USDT holdings are in self-custody wallets, rather than U.S.-licensed exchanges. Under the U.S. GENIUS Act framework, stablecoin holders do not have FDIC insurance, and reserves are considered corporate deposits at banks.

Self-custody places the responsibility back on the key holders. Bank practitioners compare it to "cash in a mattress": if private keys are stolen or lost, there is no customer service reset. Issuers like Circle can still freeze USDC by address, meaning self-custody does not equate to being unfrozen. Ethereum developers plan to introduce Frame transactions in future upgrades, allowing applications to pay gas fees, thereby lowering the barrier for users who have only stablecoins in their wallets but cannot afford ETH transaction fees; this solution has not yet been launched.

In market mechanics, buyers are payment users and on-chain applications looking to operate outside of bank hours, while sellers are stablecoins like Tether and Circle, along with wallets like MetaMask. The events are driven by the founders' positioning, rather than a single product release. Beneficiaries include self-custody wallets, L2 payments, and stablecoin settlement networks; those under pressure are banks that charge fees based on custodial accounts and wire transfer delays. Institution-issued stablecoins are paving the way for the dollar on-chain, but the key layer still determines whether money truly leaves intermediaries.

ETH and major stablecoin supplies continue to concentrate on Ethereum and its L2; on-chain visibility shows the proportion of holdings in self-custody addresses, but Lubin's statements do not change the settlement volume for the day.
