Venture capital firm a16z has released the 7th edition of its top 100 consumer AI applications list. This edition introduces a revenue ranking while retaining the existing web and mobile traffic rankings. In the first edition three years ago, ChatGPT ranked first, while Claude did not make the list, and the categories were primarily limited to chatbots and image generation.

ChatGPT still holds the top position, with over 1 billion monthly active users on mobile. Claude has risen to third place on the web, with nearly 1 billion monthly visits. In August, ChatGPT's web visits were about twice that of Gemini and six times that of Claude. On mobile, its monthly active users were approximately 2.5 times that of Gemini and 14 times that of Claude.

The categories have expanded. Programming includes Lovable, Cursor, and Replit; music includes Suno; design includes Figma; voice includes ElevenLabs; video includes Higgsfield and Kling; agents include Manus; and hardware includes Plaud. Cursor has risen from 41st to 35th on the web, while Base44 enters at 46th. Only seven companies appear on all three lists: ChatGPT, Claude, Suno, Perplexity, Photoroom, Canva, and Notion. ChatGPT ranks first on each list.

The revenue ranking is based on YipitData's sample of U.S. credit card data, not a census, and should not be considered total company revenue. Only 4.5% of U.S. consumers pay for any AI subscription. Among payers, the top 1% spend an average of about $903 per month, with a median of $25. ChatGPT's paid subscriptions in the U.S. are about three times that of Claude or Gemini. Claude has surpassed Gemini in U.S. paid subscriptions.

The report refers to this as the heavy user economy. Most people remain at the free tier or do not use it, while a small number of developers, creators, and high consumers contribute the majority of subscriptions. The lab's own models do not necessarily overshadow vertical tools, as programming, design, and video can still remain on the list through task, style, and multi-model choices.

This reflects subscription concentration, not widespread usage. The buyers are the top 1% of payers spending $903 per month, while the sellers are chat, programming, music, and video tools. The event is driven by the list's first inclusion of credit card spending in the rankings. Funding flows to the paid tier of ChatGPT and the few applications that can appear on all three lists. Beneficiaries are those with both traffic and paid subscriptions, while those that only have visits but do not make the revenue list are under pressure.
