Lockheed Martin to invest up to $9 billion over five years to expand capacity

Lockheed Martin plans to invest $8 to $9 billion by 2030 to upgrade over 20 factories in the U.S. and expand ammunition and missile production capacity. Dennis Gogg, head of European operations, stated that the funds will be used to accelerate the delivery of related technologies and systems to customers. The company has already invested over $1 billion, and CEO Jim Taiclet maintained this capital expenditure range during the earnings report.

The expansion targets three interception and strike lines. The Patriot PAC-3 MSE is expected to triple its production capacity by the end of 2030, with the U.S. military providing a maximum of approximately $53.86 billion in unpriced contract modifications over seven years; the THAAD interceptor missile production is planned to increase from about 96 units per year to approximately 400 units per year, or about four times, supported by a $35 billion seven-year framework; precision strike missile capacity is expected to increase two to three times. The Troy, Alabama, production center for ammunition services THAAD and may take on the next generation of interceptors; the Camden, Arkansas, acceleration center services PAC-3; the new assembly building in Cortland connects to the next generation of interceptors. The expansion in Troy itself is estimated to cost about $900 million to $1.1 billion, nearly doubling the on-site throughput capacity.

Archbald, Pennsylvania, plans to invest over $60 million to expand its factory and add over 700 jobs, while a nearly 150,000 square-foot facility in Jessup will produce cable harnesses to support precision strike missiles, THAAD, PAC-3, and Apache sensors, with phased production aimed at 2027. A modular smart assembly line in Ocala, Florida, will handle guidance heads and missile control units. The company stated that the government prefers to exchange lower investments for speed, with some facilities being leased before purchase to align with tax systems. Multi-year procurement has been incorporated into the Department of Defense's "Free Arsenal" procurement transformation, with increased orders for Tomcats, GMLRS, and HIMARS.

The expansion of capacity in the Americas directly corresponds to European and Indo-Pacific customers queuing up. Gogg described capital expenditure as a delivery speed, translating factory timelines into contract performance. Suppliers are also required to increase production; otherwise, the assembly line can only run idle. Cash flow and high credit ratings are being used by management to explain that this round of expansion does not need to wait for a new round of equity financing.

In market mechanisms, this is about locking in orders to secure capacity, and then locking in the next batch of orders with that capacity. Buyers include the U.S. military's ammunition accounts and allied air defense users waiting in line; sellers are the missile supply chains that previously operated in small annual batches. Funds flow from multi-year procurement contracts into construction, tooling, and secondary suppliers. Beneficiaries are component manufacturers that can keep up with three to four times the ramp-up, along with Lockheed Martin's missile and fire control departments; those under pressure are competitive production lines whose delivery cycles have been disrupted by war and still quote at old rhythms, as well as local communities that must gather personnel and ordnance permits before 2030. The driving event is that multi-year large orders have already been signed, turning capital expenditure from intention into factory blueprints.
