Tesla Continues to Add Safety Features via Over-the-Air Upgrades

Tesla owners have compiled a list showing that many new features have been added to sold vehicles through over-the-air software upgrades without hardware changes. The list includes emergency departure while supercharging, full self-driving launched in 2020, Sentry Mode, child presence detection, automatic collision avoidance, range and efficiency improvements solely through software, as well as automatic emergency braking, forward and rear collision warnings, and side collision warnings.

On October 1, Tesla's charging department launched emergency departure at supercharging stations in the U.S. The latest software version 2026.38.3 allows vehicles to shift into drive while still plugged in, enabling drivers to assess whether it is safer to leave immediately than to exit the vehicle and unplug. The company states that misuse may damage the vehicle and charging station, with penalties for intentional abuse. Depending on the site, electrical and civil damages can reach up to $25,000, and vehicles must be taken back to the shop for charging port repairs. Model S and Model X from before 2021 do not support this feature, which currently only covers U.S. supercharging stations.

Automatic collision avoidance is another software feature. Starting in September 2026, it began rolling out to early users with FSD v14.3.9 and software version 2026.27.6, limited to AI4 hardware and available in North America. During manual driving, if a frontal collision is imminent and braking alone is insufficient, the system will temporarily take over full self-driving to avoid the obstacle. Trigger conditions include controlled highways, speeds below 85 mph, and no pedestrians or cyclists in the path. The intervention range for driver inattention is between 22.5 and 85 mph. Once the danger is cleared, FSD continues driving, and braking or steering can regain control.

Earlier features have already been included in the support page. Sentry Mode detects suspicious activity while the vehicle is locked and parked, recording video and sounding alarms, with notifications sent via the app. It will deactivate if the battery drops to 20% or below, except at supercharging stations. Dog Mode was renamed Pet Mode in the spring 2026 update, allowing users to select dog, cat, or hedgehog on the screen and display the pet's name. Blind spot warnings are now integrated with ambient lights, turning red when danger is detected. The doors remain closed when cyclists or vehicles approach, part of the same lateral sensing system.

Software gains in range and efficiency do not have a single unified number. Tesla has repeatedly adjusted thermal management, energy recovery, and driving logic through over-the-air upgrades, increasing usable mileage for the same batch of vehicles without changing batteries. Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warnings, driver drowsiness warnings, and airbag safety updates are also first written into software packages before being pushed to existing vehicles. The list includes turn signal cameras, but no unified push version has been provided in public materials.

For owners who have already taken delivery of their vehicles, the software package is written once and distributed to the entire fleet. This discussion is driven by the feature list, not a new vehicle release. Money does not change hardware; value shifts from factory modifications to the sold fleet. Beneficiaries are owners who can receive safety features without returning to the factory, and Tesla, which has transformed FSD from an optional feature to an emergency takeover layer. Traditional automakers, who rely on dealers for installations and in-store updates for profit, and owners of older models that do not support emergency departure from before 2021 are under pressure.

Tesla treats vehicles as rewriteable terminals, rather than fixed upon delivery. Both Sentry Mode and Dog Mode were added post-sale via over-the-air upgrades in 2019. Full self-driving was initially rolled out to a limited group of owners in 2020 before wider distribution. The automatic collision avoidance feature introduced in September 2026 embeds the same supervisory FSD into manual driving emergency paths, limited to AI4 hardware. Hardware generations determine who receives the next package, while software dictates what that package entails.

The capital pathway is not involved in this list's turnover. Development costs are spread across the entire team, with marginal costs being the push, not tooling. Emergency departure changes supercharging from a state of being unusable to one that allows departure at the risk of damage, with the company setting a loss cap at $25,000 and using mandatory return for repairs to prevent misuse. The motivation is to demonstrate with the existing fleet that safety features do not have to wait for the next vehicle.

A comparable example is Apple adding features to old phones through system updates, unlike Toyota's recall for reprogramming. The difference is that recalls address defects, while this adds options and safety layers continuously to sold vehicles. The current position is controlled: FSD remains supervisory, collision avoidance has speed, road, and road user limitations, starting in North America, while Europe has not yet implemented this layer even with FSD approval.

Structurally, this represents a technological replacement. Traditional automakers lock feature sets at the factory, charging dealers for installations and recalls. Over-the-air upgrades shift the timing of feature releases from model cycles to software package cycles. Pricing power thus shifts from hardware configuration lists to those who can continuously write to the existing fleet. The segment of old hardware that is excluded marks the boundary of this pathway.

  1. Delivery does not mean fixed; the fleet that can be written to is the product.
  2. One-time development, distributed to the whole team, with marginal costs in the push.
  3. Feature cycles are shorter than model cycles, leading to a loss of configuration lists.
